Adobe CS 6.0 Production Premium
« on: April 15, 2012, 12:53:39 am »

Ok folks,

I just bought CS 5.5 Production Premium today.  That includes the upgrade to 6.0, which is supposed to ship to all upgraders by 5/31.

I have to crunch hard on taxes for 3 more days, then I can download the 6.0 Beta and have a look.

I understand Premiere Pro has a new grading tool? I forget who Adobe bought. Looking forward to that in particular.

Apparently the metadata exchange and Smart Objects are quite improved between Premiere, Photoshop, and After Works? Plus some nice upgrades in PS.

Anything else?  I posted the Creative Cow link in another thread, about how they were dumping FCP and going to Premiere because of the metadata work flow and the native codec support, with no transcoding.

I plan to spend a lot of time the next two months getting up to speed. Then off with the family for the summer, and hopefully start working again in the fall.

Sorry I started this too early - I should be doing taxes. I just have not seen a good discussion of 6.0 yet,  outside of press releases and Adobe forum posts.

Thoughts?

Cheers, Michael

Looks like they have extended non-destructive editing via metadata and/or layers to all of the core applications for motion - Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Speed Grade, etc.  Very similar in concept to Lightroom, especially with the ability to create and apply looks. And Photoshop, with more extensive use of Adjustment Layers.

Lots of ability to work with RAW footage in real time, with no transcoding or partial renderings when exchanging between applications as before. Ability to make adjustments and grade on playing footage. Quite a bit of support for FCP or Avid files to allow import, or Adobe to be part of an existing workflow.

A few other new or modified core applications that support metadata throughout the workflow. Story, which can carry the script from pre-prod to post and tag clips. Prelude, which has a lot of Bridge type functions, to find, name, tag, and add meta data to assets before ingestion, Media Encoder which is pretty similar, and Encore for output to DVD, Blueray, etc.

This is the core of Speed Grade that was an acquisition. Not quite as integrated yet, but looks nice:

Lumetri Deep Color Engine

The Lumetri Deep Color Engine is the 32-bit floating-point image-processing technology at the heart of SpeedGrade CS6. The Lumetri Deep Color Engine offers maximum scope for working with High Dynamic Range content, allowing you to pull details from blacks and highlights that might otherwise be lost.

Along with standard post-production formats, the SpeedGrade CS6 Lumetri Deep Color Engine allows you to work directly with RAW files, the digital negative recorded from your camera sensor. As with digital still photography, RAW formats provide you with the greatest latitude as you craft your looks, whereas most other grading tools require you to render RAW files into an RGB format for post-production work. In addition, the Lumetri Deep Color Engine supports both linear and logarithmic color spaces, giving you the flexibility to work with a variety of source material.

The Lumetri Deep Color Engine works nondestructively, so you can revisit color decisions at any point in your grading workflow and make changes without compromising the integrity of your source material.

Nice overview of CS 6.0 here:

This is the Creative Cow article on workflow advantages of Premiere. Sponsored by HP, but pretty straight up, Ther Windows part isn't that important if that isn't relavent to you:

The past few years has forced me to rethink a lot of my business decisions. What I'm going to lay out for you is how I reached the decision to switch from Final Cut Pro to Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as why part of my postproduction department is running on Windows.

Yeah, the HP Z800 is a very good computer indeed if you want to switch to PC.

Thanks Fred!

I am going to run windows.  I have a Windows i7 box with 8 GB of RAM and 2, 1TB internal drives connected to a 6TB NAS, with 3 monitors on 2 video cards.

I have to check on the graphics card/GPU for adobe and total RAM capability.  I will run that for the short term.  I hope to find some studio space by October or November, then I will complete a full outfit for the studio.  I can't do the physical work of shooting anymore, so I will focus more on collaborating, partnering, directing, pre- and post.

(I really screwed up last year.  I had a purchase agreement on a 2,000 square foot repo home on 1 acre, in a zoned busness area.  Only $17,000. I walked because the roof leaked worse than I thought (over the garage) and it need a new septic.  But at that price I could have run a composting toilet and spent $10K to fix it up and done multiple internal and outside sets, plus offices, computer room, and printer room.  Versus paying $800+ a month for studio space!  Maybe late next fall I can find another  (this was is an area of $160k plus homes.))

OK, totally OT - from servers to buildings ... Cheers! Back to taxes!

Release date is May 6.  Updates are supposed to ship by the end of May.

If you buy any version of 5.5 now - full or update - you get 6.0 free.

Interesting article on how Adobe is targeting broadcast with this release. Apparently the Prelude ingest, meta-tagging, & transcoding tool was developed in conjunction with CNN & BBC.

http://sportsvideo.org/main/blog/2012/04/17/live-from-nab-adobe-targets-broadcast-market-with-creative-suite-6/

That article clearly calls out FCPX as a srew up and talks about the opportunity for Adobe.

Quick passage fom another article that isn't worth reading:

There are also two new tools, Adobe SpeedGrade CS6 for professional color grading, and Adobe Prelude CS6, an elegant solution for the process of ingest, logging and transcoding, essential tasks in a modern file-based workflow.

For advanced video editing, Premiere Pro CS6 incorporates a new user interface, trimming and OpenCL support in the new turbo-charged Mercury Playback Engine. After Effects CS6 is the biggest release in a decade, with huge performance gains and powerful 3D features.

I was able  to upgrade my CS2 Premium for $700 to what will be CS 6.0 Production Premium.  Basically saved all of the cost of CS2 all those years ago in the upgrade.

Also bought 24GB of RAM in 3x8GB DDR3 sticks for my i7 PC for $170.  That will allow me to add 3 more sticks, up to 48GB if I need it. I will have 27GB for now.

I don't know if anyone is at all intereted in CS 6.0  It received a fair amount of attention at NAB.

Just in case, here is a very detailed video on new features in CS 6.0 Premiere Pro:

http://www.video2brain.com/en/courses/premiere-pro-cs6-new-features-workshop

The whole thing is 2 hours, so looks like plenty of in depth info.   It is a great introduction. Even watching just the first few minutes is helpful, considering we can't actually try it yet.   I have only watched it on my secopnd monitor while I was working on something else, but it looked solid.  Released 4/12.
