Rowes Bay seascapes in mono
« on: April 12, 2012, 12:01:14 pm »

A couple of seascapes from today. Murky water & dreary day meant mono was needed to breathe some life into these.  ;D
I'm not fully convinced by the third one. Be interested to hear your thoughts.

IMHO none of these quite work.

Mostly I feel the compositions don't work but focus, especially in the second image is an issue.
Trying a B/W conversion was worth trying though.

Nonetheless keep at it, work the site, and the great compositions will come.

Addendum:

Working on a computer with a slow wireless modem!!
Didn't even know that there were four images initially!

The focus issue I was referring to is in the third image not the second.
Humblest apologies.

Shot this location again, but at sunrise yesterday.
I think this composition is more effective - what do you think?
Still not as strong as I would have liked though.

Hi Matt

I really think the second shot works really well!
First shot not so much - bit monochrome - unlike the second one that has wonderfully subtle hues and tones.

Well done

The B&Ws do nothing for me: they all seem rather overdone.

The two colour shots are much more attractive and interesting. I respectfully disagree that the second is preferable; the colours don't look real to me. The study in blue, with its misty water, appeals much more.

It's a lovely shot, and the cool, monochromatic look makes it.

I like the blue one. Good on you for getting back out there.
But what is a tree doing rooted in the ocean???

Thank you all for the feedback.
Scott, It is a funny spot for a tree. The tree is not a mangrove, but must be some other coastal/marine species. Doesn't seem to be exactly flourishing though.

Tony,

Rowes Bay, Townsville, Australia,  just to the north of the old Jezzine Barracks at Kissing Point.
Link to location on google maps below.
I found the location on Google maps when looking for interesting rocky coastline.

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&ll=-19.239389,146.800081&spn=0.001252,0.002708&t=h&z=20

Looking at this again from the air, that tree might actually be a mangrove (shows my lack of botanical knowledge ;D) - still has leaves in this picture.

Thanks Matt

I pass through Townsville regularly on the way to various photographic jaunts but have to confess that I don't have a meaningful image of the area.
As you know even exploring relatively small parts of Queenslands coastline is a massive but always fun exercise.

I assume by your pseudonym that you are based somewhere in North Queensland.
A lot of grist for the photographic mill.

I look forward to seeing more images of your expeditions.

As others have said, the B&W images are too strong for my taste; however, the color ones, both of them, are very fine.
