Monitor profile in Windows 7
« on: April 09, 2012, 06:47:06 am »

I was profiling a monitor at a major research institute. They have Windows 7 as their OS. Their IT department has a rather restrictive policy, where only the admin account has the permission to write to Profiles folder. So when I profile the monitor I have to log in as an admin. No problem with that, as I come by and profile their monitor every now and then. Between that, they only validate their monitor to check that everything is OK.

But the problem showed up when I then logged in as an ordinary user. The monitor profile went back to the default, sRGB. It seemed that the user account weren't allowed to read from the Profiles folder. An although I had the IT support guy with, we weren't able to change that behavior.

Any idea how to set up a Windows user, so that they can use the correct monitor profile?

Best

I had similar problem in an administration office. I had the impression, that somehow they manage to switch off the whole color management in Windows. The IT guys efforts were fruitless - there was no chance to switch it back for any type of user account, so finally they left admin privileges for graphic designers accounts.

Not sure what you mean by Profiles folder.  The normal Windows location for all profiles is C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color.  This folder ususally includes in the Security pane a Users entry with Read & Execute privilege, which should allow all users access.

Added by edit - you may also have to set up Color Management as Admin so that the default for the monitor is the desired profile.  And change each user's Color Management settings.
