Tonight I was attempting to photograph penguins at a local rock colony and on occasion, there was light from two different sources: street lamps with a yellowish colour and flash lights covered in red plastic casting a red-pink light.

For both, the white balance is set to 2000K and the difference is the tint (+7 vs -68)

Tips?

If you have Lightroom 4, you can white balance for source and then use the adjustment brush and brush in the other white balance where needed.

If you are using Photoshop, output one image for each white balance and then layer them in Photoshop and use masks for each area of white balance required.

First thing is you need to do is white balance the entire image. From your description, that means that 1/2 the image should be balanced. Now, use the adjustment brush on the parts that aren't and set the white balance for the brush to correct those parts.

Or am I misunderstanding something?

Once the image has been corrected for one light source use either the adjustment brush or an adjustment GND set for the secondary temp.

Couple other techniques/ideas that may work for you:

1. Color Profile Adjustment.  Tweak the hue and saturation sliders
2. Split Tone.
3. B&W with split tone
4. Photoshop vs. LR.  May require heavy lifting such as replacing color channels and/or L*A*B* colorspace curves.
