Exhibition Fiber on 3880 printing question
« on: March 25, 2012, 06:45:01 pm »

Realize this may be a really dumb question, but I'm making my first prints with Exhibition Fiber and using some sample 17x22 sheets I bought a 7 dollars a pop, so wanting to avoid too much trial and error.

The file name of the profile I found on the Epson site indicates it's intended for printing at 2880, this is reiterated in the pdf file included with the profile. I'm wondering if anyone can confirm whether I can print with this profile at 1440 and get consistent results?

Appreciate any input on this, thanks.

Sorry, I thought you had a profile for the 2880 printer.  Your question did not say 2880 dpi.

Basic rule of thumb seems to be for glossy papers (and ink) use 2880dpi on the 3880 printer. For mat papers use 1440. Exhibition Fiber is considered glossy and I always print with 2880dpi setting.

Can you provide some references for this rule of thumb?

I guess the best reference would be Epson made the EEF profile using 2880 dpi as well as they list it on the profiles specs.
StuNY may have other sources.

As mentioned there is no real reason to use 1440.  Ink usage difference is negligible (especially in comparison to the cost of the paper), the only difference I can think of would be at 1440 it would print a little faster if you also had super microweave turned off.

That being said, a print at 1440 using a profile built at 2880 should appear virtually identical, I would be surprised if there were any density or color shifts.  Many profiles don't even specify the setting.

The main reason to use 1440 is not ink, but time -- it's quite a bit faster.  On older models like the 3800 I could easily spot differences between 1440 and 2880 dpi on Photo Black-compatible paper (like EEF).  With the newer models like the 3880, I can't reliably distinguish the two anymore.  (Of course, perhaps this is because I'm older now than I was then ...)

Going to reply to my original post as a way of responding to all the feedback. Thanks for all the input.

Sorry I didn't specify 2880dpi in my op. The reasons I've been in the habit of printing at 1440 is mainly about the difference in speed, and also based on a memory of reading Michael's opinion expressed on the LL site that a visible difference is hard to see between 1440 and 2880 (hope I'm remembering this correctly and not misrepresenting, I seem to recall this opinion in the review of the 2200?, which I've been printing with up til purchasing the 3880 this month).

The reason behind my original question was noticing on the Epson site that they provide profiles for some papers for both 1440 and 2880, but not in the case of the Exhibition Fiber profile I found. After reading the responses, I may just decide to get in the habit of printing at 2880.

Thanks again to all who responded.
