...does D800 and 5D3 have the TIFF option?

5D3 generates a JPEG when using the in camera HDR function - not helpful to professionals or enthusiasts at all unless they are press photographers or the like.

I suppose all new cameras (d4. D800, 5D3, have basically the same system. I shot TIFF, by the way, does D800 and 5D3 have the TIFF option?

Just tried on the D800, yes it works with TIFF also.

Cheers,
Bernard

Good to hear. I'm not about to shoot anything in JPEG.

Well at least Nikon users get the advantage of a TIFF file to play with in post-processing then!

Unfortunately, the HDR feature in the 5D3 is IMHO a bit of a gimmick, however who knows what will happen in the future.

It is also essentially tone mapping and not true HDR.

Was that a typo? Seems more likely that it's not tone mapping but exposure blending?

Or when used as a luminosity mask when shooting Raw+JPEG of the same scene ...

Not directly connected to the original subject, but I tested the HDR feature on the D800 for portraits today. The setup was two Kino Flo 400 Diva-lites giving 1/300 at f:11 with 640 ISO with 85mm Nikkor T/S, camera was on tripod. Only one shot out of 10 was totally sharp, in all other shots the model had moved just slightly during that 2/10 of a second or so. In this context slightly means more than 1/3 of a thickness of an eyelash. Head needs to be clamped if shooting HDR (for pixel peepers at least)...
