Nex 7 with Zeiss 21 f/2.8 and several comments.
« on: March 11, 2012, 10:08:49 am »

Received the call from Allens Camera near Philly that my Nex 7 was in. Elected to run down and pick it up as I wanted to look over his selection of Zeiss lenses.
I had a previous thread here about lens selection for the Nex and had been thinking of just going with the Zeiss 24mm. Then the D800 was announced and that pushed me in another direction. At a $1,000 the Zeiss 24 could only be used on the Nex. I really wanted a prime Zeiss in the 21mm to 24mm range for the D800. I purchased the Nex/Nik Novaflex adapter so that whatever lens I purchased could now be used on both cameras. Plus I could now use any of my other Nikon lens on the Nex.

The first lens I looked at was the Zeiss 35mm f/2. It is the perfect size for the Nex body but just not wide enough for the full frame D800.
Then Allen pulled out the 21mm f/2.8 and what a jewell. Did not have a camera to put it on and shoot with but brought it home anyway to try out.
I shoot mostly landscapes with many being pretty large panos. We will see how this woks out next week on my trip trip to Sedona.

Just a couple of my first impressions. (Not a review)
Love the build quality,top notch.
No HDR bracketing in Raw. Hope that changes. For my pano work I am used to 5 exposure brackets.
Also bought the Hoya cir-polirizer with ultra thin frame, will report back with some shots with and without.
My eyes require trifocals which makes it almost impossible for me to use the electronic view finder especially when hand holding.
On a tripod I can tilt my glasses to see through the proper  tri focal. But you are so concentrated on trying to get your eyes to focus then taking photographs.
The diopter adjustment is pretty good and when dialed to its limit.  I have the view pretty close to being in focus with that adjustment.
So I guess all in all it's not that bad.
I think this battery may be a weak point. Just fooling around for several hours it was under 50%.
Heck with my Nikon system and En-el4a I can shoot for several days before getting to 50%
If your going into the boondocks take at least 2 or 3 along.

Other then the sensor size I love it.
If Sony can build one like this in FF I think all my full size DSLR gear may go.

Dan,

Did you get any time to work with the kit lens, the 18-55mm?

Thanks

Paul,
We have the 5n with the 18-55 kit lens. I really like it on that camera. Its light weight, sharp and for the price you just cannot beat it.
I bought the 5n for Mrs. Berg so do not shoot with it all that much. She really wants the Sony 18-200 to go with it as the 55 is too short for the grandkids sports.
Yesterday I put the Novoflex adapter along with her Nikon 18-200 on the 5n for her to try out. She did not like it at all.
It is quite heavy and she hated having to manual focus. (Gosh aren't we spoiled.)
I am going to take the 18-55 along on my trip to try it out on the Nex 7.
Will let you know how the shots look.

Dan, thanks, I would like to hear how the kit lens holds up on the 7.  It's too bad that so far have not allowed
bracketing from raw, hopefully they will allow with a firmware update.

This was the first time using the battery? The battery will improve a lot after a few charges. Dont know why.

It was one I used from my 5n (same battery) and was charged maybe 3 times.
Hope that's the answer.
Thanks

Hey Dan

Greetings from Ireland! Good to hear you are enjoying your Nex 7. I just received my one a few days ago and I have to say that I am really enjoying using this camera. I was wondering if you got the change to make any comparisons between the Zeiss 24 and the Kit lens @ 24mm? I am considering a purchase but so far the results from this little kit lens have been really quite impressive! I really like the look of that new combo you have there. Please post some sample images if you have the time!

Best regards
John

John,

The only other lens I have tried is the 18-55 kit lens that came with the 5n.
Very good by the way.
Skipped the 24mm in favor of the Zeiss 21 that I purchased.
The new 21 will be primarily for the D800.
But for now will see what it looks like on the Nex7.
Pictures to follow on my return from Sedona next week.

Good luck with your new piece as well,a great camera.

Thanks Dan

I'd love to see some sample images from that 21 when you have some. I figured that the Zeiss 24 on the Nex 7 would be a great street shooter with decent AF. Still the Focus peaking on the N7 is a joy to use and really opens up a wide choice of lenses!

Cheers

Dan, I have the same exact setup. Of course I really bought the 21 for use on a D800 (sometime in the distant future!) But those 24 mp are really something with good glass. And the way the sensor pulls detail out of the shadows is way, way more advanced than anything else I've ever owned.

My D800E came in 2 weeks ago and the Zeiss is fantastic on it as well.
Now that I have the Zeiss parked on the D800E I really need a smaller lens as a walk around for the Nex.
Is this ever going to end!

John M.
I will try to get some decent shots up this week.

I highly recommend anyone using the NEX-7 to check out both the Sigma 19 and Sigma 30 that are available.  They are lightweight, small, and very sharp.  The Sigma 30, in particular, is astoundingly sharp at all apertures across the frame.  I've owned and used several ZM and Contax G lenses on NEX, and the Sigma 30 is as good or better than all of them, including the venerable Contax G 45.  Sigma really pulled a rabbit out of their hats for $199 each.  In fact, I like the Sigma 30 so much that I sold all of my ZMs, and I sold my Zeiss 24/1.8 as well.  Go figure!

The lenses are plasticky and lightweight, but do yourself a favor and spend the $199 on the Sigma 30 and Sigma 19.

p.s. the Sigma 30 is so sharp that, according to the mtf tests over at lensrentals.com, combining it with the NEX-7 actually resolves similarly to the D800 with some Zeiss and Nikkors (but not all of them, obviously.)

Dan, I see you've been sucked in! I use Leica glass for walk around on the NEX-7, works a treat with a 50 & 75 Summarit (for the physical size). Both lenses are unbelievably sharp and I've owned many, many M lenses in the past. I don't know if there is proof for certain, but my experience seems to favor the less expensive Summarits for digital capture.
