Lu-La Advancd Guide to Lightroom 4
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:30:29 pm »

I have placed the first sections of the Lightroom 4 tutorial in the Store.

The 2 hour+ Introduction is complete

The Advanced Guide to LR4 contains key videos on

 - Develop: the use of the new sliders in the Basic panel, Histogram adjustment, WB tool

- Working with parametric & point curves. The new Red, Green & Blue curves

- a detailed exploration of Soft Proofing for printing and for export to the web or media device

-  a deep dive into Process 2012. Examples of Process conversion: the good & the not so good.

-  A detailed look at the adjustments of the new Basic sliders. Using the provided swatch chart, teach yourself the effects on tone

- The progress of a new Process. But why do camera companies persist in making their RAW formats proprietary? (a good Reichmann Rant)  ;)

I am currently replacing LR4_14.zip - specifically the video#10 'HSL & Split Tone in B&W'.

I had let a bad gamma shift mess up Michael's screen grabs.  Sorry about that.

They were very washed out - too much green beer yesterday. Now they look more like the originals.

The only way to identify the updated .mov file is by the Creation date,  which for the new file is March 18.

If you re-download, I would trash the old St Paddy's day file first.

Chris

EDIT - The new file is now in place

New Videos in LR4_19.zip

Table of Contents v4

All to do with working between Lightroom 4 & Photoshop - specifically PS CS6

- Move a file in and out of Lightroom to Photoshop, making edits
- Use Raw files as Smart Objects
- Blend two Raw files with different sharpening settings for high and low frequency areas. Yes, take two versions of a Raw file and blend them together!

- Merge to Panorama in Photoshop CS6.

- HDR with Photoshop CS6
- Merge layers in Photoshop to blend different exposures for a more 'natural' look to HDR

As usual, if your LR4_19.zip shows no size, hit Download Now anyway - it means we have not updated the shopping cart yet - but the files are there and will download.

Only 21 minutes this week since I was away in Mexico and driving back to Toronto with Michael.

This completes the Develop part of LR4. Next release will concentrate on various functions & techniques within Library

Ten New Videos in LR4_20.zip, LR4_21.zip, LR4_22.zip, LR4_23.zip

Table of Contents v5

These videos are largely about various functions in the Library module

- Changing the default rendering of a Raw file on import. If you have a particular camera & ISO that you know is going to require some basic noise reduction, learn how to apply that automatically on import.

- Smart Collections. How to let Lightroom do the organization of files for you; let the database do the work.

- Video Files. How to view, trim, colour correct and export video.

- Location Catalogs. How to work with new empty catalogs on a per project basis and then import them into your main master catalog. This video shows Jeff Schewe's Selection Editing workflow.

- Michael Reichmann's Selection Editing workflow: a different 'take'

- Keywording. How to make key wording work for you

- Keywording on location. Work with a Master Keyword list and keep everything organized when you import a new catalog. Avoid having to insert and edit keywords from two lists.

- DNG. Learn about the new abilities of LR4 in saving out DNG files

- Make a Virtual Copy the Master Image. When a Virtual Copy becomes the file interpretation you want, change it to become the master image.

- Publish Services. Use this valuable feature of LR to automatically publish and edit photographs onto an iPad or other external source such as Flickr or FaceBook

EDIT All files in place now

Table of Contents v6

I have posted another hour+ of videos in LR4_24.zip, LR4_25.zip & LR4_26.zip

- The Creation of a Portrait. In a studio portrait shooting session, Jeff demonstrates Tethered Shooting & using a 'live' Develop Preset. Then he shows selection editing, basic corrections and finally retouches a 'beauty shot' - all within Lightroom4.

- Map - an overview

- Map - GeoTagging. How to edit capture time. How to add a GPS' tracklog to Lightroom4 using a freely available translator. Learn how to reverse GeoCode.

- Book. Create a PDF book of your photographs, publish to a PDF and import a portfolio book of images to an iPad.

- Saved Creations. New to LR4 and a critical element in working with Books, Slideshows, Prints & Web Galleries. Learn how to create a 'saved creation' in those modules.

- Layout Overlay. Create and use a Layout overlay when shooting to a layout. Preview the photograph, type & graphic elements of a final printed page within Lightroom.

Please note that this is the second last posting of videos. When I post again, that will mark the completion of the Tutorial and thus the 25% Off 'Incomplete' Sale will end.

May 26th, 2012

The final (for now!*) videos have been added this afternoon.

Table of Contents v7

- The Slideshow module; adding a soundtrack, titles and exporting to video

- Print - an overview

- Print - Four Features: how to quickly create a contact sheet; how to create a custom print using multiple images; how to print to a file for photo-lab printing; how to use the page layout potential of Picture Package

- Print Resolution. Another look at the right resolution at which to print your images

- Print. A comparison Black & White print 'test' using regular  ColorSync printing vs. Epson's Advanced Black & White mode

- RGB readout in Soft Proofing. Yes, Lightroom 4 shows 0 to 255 RGB levels in Soft Proofing instead of percentages.

- Web. A look at some of the Flash-based web galleries available in Lightroom 4

- The Wrap. Michael & Jeff discuss Process 2012 and its greater processing requirements. How to optimize your setup for the new demands of Lightroom 4. (Mike & Jeff enjoy a margarita overlooking San Miguel de Allende, Mexico...)

* We will be adding a few more videos on things that we were unable to cover during the shoot in Mexico.

Jeff, Michael & I will be shooting that additional content during June. BUT - I am taking July off and far away from editing video. So the additional material will likely not be available until late August or September.

Have a great Summer fellow Northeners and Antipodeans - go shoot in the cool!

For those who may be waiting for some new videos in the Lightroom 4 tutorial, they are complete and wil be made available simultaneously with an announcement from Adobe regarding a related product.  ::)

We have been told that that announcement will be forthcoming in the near future. Please don't ask me more.  :D

I have added a couple of short videos to the Introduction stand-alone Tutorial. These do not appear in the combo Introduction and Advanced since there is a more in-depth version of those in the new videos yet-to-be released and the Intro ones would be redundant.

Stay patiently tuned

Adobe today announced the release of a DNG FlatField plugin for Lightroom 4.

This means that we may now release the videos that we shot in June with Eric Chan & Jeff Schewe on the additional features of Lightroom 4.1 and 4.2.

Eric is Principal Scientist at Adobe and responsible for many of the new features of Lightroom 4 and Process 2012.

Three of these videos are available at no extra charge in the existing Advanced Tutorial for Lightroom 4 in zip files 31 & 32. Check out the new Table of Contents v.8

There is also a new add-on tutorial:

Guide to Lightroom 4.x - Update with Eric Chan & Jeff Schewe currently on sale in the Store at 33% Off for $9.95

Over two hours of content on

- The DNG Flat Field Plugin
- Chromatic Aberration & Defringe
- High Dynamic Range in 32 bit floating point
- Interview with Eric Chan

Check out the Table of Contents or the main Product page for further details
