Direction to False Kiva in Canyonlands?
« on: January 07, 2004, 08:08:05 pm »

Greetings.
I can't answer your question but perhaps I can offer some direction. According to the following document, False Kiva is a class II site which means that park personnel are directed to divulge the location when asked.
Hope that helps. Would you please let me know where it is when you find out. Good luck,

This place is located in the Island of the Sky, and there are generally no maps to the spot.  However, the trailhead is found along the road out to the Upheaval Dome.  It's steep and rocky and follows some high places.  Ask the ranger at the Visitor Center for more information.

It's less than three kilometers (~1.5 mile) round trip from the trailhead.  The best light would be a slightly overcast day so you can get detail in the foreground without blowing out the distant formations.  Sunset period would also be good.  In fact the best shots I've seen are taken during late afternoon, early evening.  However, if you do evening shots, bring a flashligh with you so you can find your way back without incident.  Good luck!  Bruce

Hey I was there last Feb.  (Broke my ankle right before getting to the site.

Drive past Mesa Arch entrance about 1 mile. The trail is on the left right before (I believe a small bridge).
Very tricky to find final turn out at the edge of the cliff.

I know a guide in area that might lead you there???
(This is not an official tourist site).

Good luck and watch your step

Hey Matt,

I forgot to list a few sites.

North Window Arch   Morning and evening
Mesa Arch  (morning)
False Kiva
Turret Arch  (ususally shot through North Window)
Fiery Furnace
Canyonlands
Of course, delicate arch

One of the most prolific shooting locations I have been too.

I am going to Canyonlands National Park later this month and would really like to photograph the site called False Kiva, which I believe is in the Island of the Sky region.  It's the site where the photographs look like they have been taken from an alcove with the kiva silhouetted in front of the expanse of canyonlands, popularized by Tom Till.  Can anyone help me with directions to the trail or any information?

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions.

In terms of planning my trip, does any one know how long of a hike this might be?  Is it a morning or evening shoot for best light?

I am planning to go there the second week in March. This is one area I want to see if any at all. I am very interested in hiring a guide to get to the False Kiva and other areas in the Canyonlands and I want to hire a guide when in the Monument Valley area. Does anyone know of any guides in particular and how to get in contact with them? And possibly ones with photographic experience.

Thanks

Matt

PS, Does anyone have any suggestions as to what areas I should definitely not miss while in the area.

Larryg,

Thanks for the good info. I will try and email Dan and see what he would charge for that service. And thanks for the site suggestions for photographs. Looked on your site and wow! Some awesome photos. Your photos have given me inspiration about my upcoming trip.

Thanks,

Matt
