Colour alterations when loading to the web
« on: February 27, 2012, 05:28:44 am »

Hi All

Colour problem when i hit save for the web in CS4.....my lovely reds go orange in the sky and pale pink in some heather......have i pushed the colours/reds out of gamut at some point in processing?....i had been trying   using individual channels to adjust colour/contrast? (adjustments - curves- red green blue channels adjusted individually)

In camera  = Adobe 98
PS CS4 = Prophoto RGB
save to web command in CS4 =  convert to sRGB

the unwanted alteration are noticeable as soon as i hit the save to web preview. I have heard of a ''out of gamut warning'' but i dont have it up and running currently.....IF this is the problem id think this might be a good idea

Thanks in advance for any input

If you are not seeing the problem just after converting from ProPhoto to sRGB, but you are seeing it thereafter only in the web preview, and if you are using Adobe Flash for displaying your web content, this is a well known problem. Try using  a non-Flash application for displaying your web content and see if that helps.  Use of gamut warning is not a bad idea, but it is an on/off binary kind of warning. Doesn't tell you whether the extent of it is small or large. Softproofing and careful attention to histograms are preferable. I do recommend that you bring yourself up-to-speed on the colour management and colour correction aspects of digital image processing, for which there are ample resources on this website and numerous other places.

Thanks Mark

i shall look through those points youve made...as for coming up to speed yes thats what iam doing currently and thats probably why ive come across the problem using new techniques iam unaccustomed to iam currently reading (Dan Margulis classic guide to colour correction)

One more clue ....in save to the web (CS4) the problem is clearly seen by switching between (windows no colour management) and (monitor colour) when i hit monitor colour my reds go orange which is how the image is seen on the web....does that help narrow it down at all?

Shaun,

First things first. (1) Read up on colour management to understand how to structure a colour-managed workflow between your images, the monitor, the web, the printer etc. (2) Then get into colour correction, and for that there are many resources on the internet. I would not recommend the Margulis book to beginners, and while it has some classic technique in it, much has happened in the world of software since he wrote it.

Colour management is particularly important for monochrome! May sound crazy, but true.
