Trick questions need answering to register
« on: February 25, 2012, 12:05:50 pm »

A friend of mine is trying to register with the forum.

I tried to register at LL several times over the last few days and get an error saying I did not answer the two questions properly.

I am not sure you recall but they need one that asks what the forum is about, hint photography. I tried photography and landscapes. It also asks to complete the name with Luminous first, so I answer landscapes. I thought it might be fussy about spelling and capitalization so I tried it various ways.
Anyway, it won't let me register[/i]

According to him he has to answer 2 questions. I have no idea what he's talking about. Can you help?

He should be able to tell singular from plural! ;-)

The questions are simple - and they provide some protection against spamming bots  - unfortunately not against spamming humans  :(

I suspect that the check box to agree with the terms was not checked.

I am sure the answers were correct - unless the friend is a non-English speaker - in which case they can contact customerservice AT luminous-landscape.com by email giving their details and I will register them

Is that a typo, Chris, or a deliberate anti-spam technique? :-)

Ironically Frances 728 seems to be spam and there appears to have been a few spam posts of late.
Weirdly if you quote the above post, it shows a link to something suspicious. Despite there being no link in the post.

Correct, and it leads (according to a reverse WhoIs domain search) to someone from China who has registered, or it was registered in his name, some 100 domains with 12 websites leading to the same IP address in Reno, USA (the website hosting the JPEG imagefile was created yesterday).

I've reported several of these recent fake subscribers to the moderators, and seen their messages disappear from LuLa. The moderators do manage things, but there can be timezone delays before things are resolved. Let's hope it doesn't take away too much of their valuable time.

Cheers,
Bart

Since we have recently suffered from a large increase in forum spammers, I have made the questions harder and re-instituted the dreaded "Type these hard-to-read letters & numbers"

Chris,

there are several of these scattered throughout the forums. I haven't reported them previously because I hadn't recognized the hidden link trick. Is the report to mods function the best way to point them out, or would it be easier if I just collected the comment links and sent them to you all at once?

Best just to hit the Report to Moderator link and identify as SPAM or SPAMMER
