Upgrade path for Lightroom
« on: February 14, 2012, 03:48:54 pm »

I see that LR3 is being sold as low as $79.00 (Adorama for example).

So now I'm wondering if there will be a $99 upgrade from LR3 to LR4 (and will it be available as soon as LR4 is officially out?)

$178 is a much better price that what I'd expect LR4 to be ($299).

I can't see into the future but in the past it has been that price and the update path has been made available at the time the final product was sold.

There better be a $99 upgrade to lightroom 4 because I just bought lightroom 3 today just for that reason.

Being cheap, I'm still on LR2. Based on past behaviour, does anyone know if I might be able to upgrade from LR2 to LR4 in a single step or must I choose between upgrading in single steps or just buying a fresh package when LR4 comes out?

thanks

Just got an email blast from B&H: LR 3 is $69.95 for the next 24 hrs.

Lightroom 4 beta will not upgrade Lightroom 1.x, Lightroom 2.x or Lightroom 3.x catalogs. The beta is intended to be used for testing and feedback purposes. Lightroom 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4 beta libraries will be able to be migrated to the finished version of Lightroom 4.

Today you may purchase an upgrade to LR3 if you have LR1 or LR2.

Hi Walter. I think we're talking past each other. You're talking about the ability of new versions of LR to import catalogues from previous versions. I know that Adobe don't enable that on beta versions, presumably because they don't want people to depend on a beta, and then complaining when it dies and corrupts their catalogue in its death throes.

I'm talking about the cost of purchasing the upgrade. When LR4 comes out, is it likely that I'll be able to buy an LR4 Upgrade pack, and apply it to my existing LR2 installation or must I purchase an LR3 upgrade pack too [or possibly skip LR3 and go directly to a fresh installation of LR4 if that's cheaper than two upgrades]

Colin,

To answer your question.......yes you may upgrade LR2 to LR4. You do not need to worry about going to LR3 first.
Earlier catalogues will upgrade to LR4 compatability with the shipping version.

Look at things this way... With Adobe’s traditional $100 upgrade license for Lightroom, you will save about $65 over the retail version of Lightroom 4 when it comes   :)

You're quite right. This is what I get for writing responses in between doing work. Walter & Rich, thanks.

Will it be possible to upgrade from LR1 to LR4? Started out with LR1 beta and then LR1, switched to Aperture and have been using it ever since. Would like to come back to LR with LR4 for the tighter integration with PS. Just wondering if this will be possible or will it require a full version or LR3 upgrade? Would be nice to go from LR1 to LR4 if possible.

Thanks,

Mark

Wouldn't it be $120 in savings? (or $130 with B&H deal). Lightroom usually sells for $299 retail. But buying Lightroom 3 for $79.95 + $99 upgrade = about $180 then $300 - $180 = $120

That is a pretty sweet deal, all things considered.
