What you say makes also all sense.

I think there's an honest article here on the real cost of the Scarlet: http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/mcurtis/story/red_finally_takes_the_wraps_off_new_camera_-_scarlet-x/

But still for what it gives it's a well placed money. IMO.

I think there's nothging close to that to date.

Sure $14k a great camera but do you have $14k plus..

$2k battery system (Vlock double charger, 3 batts)

$3k grown up tripod

$1k microphones

$3k lenses

bla bla...

it starting to look like $20-5 k

To actually shoot

And I really lost count with little expensive things I own, be that $500 of ND filters, custom short lead for  lavaliere to camera, nice shouder rig

Many tripod plates, bla bla

thats another 1k or 2k of things you don't even notice..

Of course if you have that money its fantastic because three years ago you would have needed a £200k F35 sony or something to shoot such quality (or less)

It's gona be less for me at the begining.

On the lens side I'm equiped to work. Don't plan actually to work with Canon lenses, but will get the Canon mount.
Later on can upgrade or rent top lenses.

Mics, done already and on the sound side if things are serious will get a tech.

tripod: the scarlet size weight won't oblige me to upgrade.

the exter battery is really the only thing I'd need.

Considering that the price is 10.000 with mount + the minimum Red accessories 5000, at 15.000-18.000 you have a full set.

No need urgently the Red Rocket because the Red workflow works very well on Avid with AMA, even on a laptop !!...and I can even do a 4K editing in real time using Edius if needed in DPX - HQX workflow.
So no rush at the beginning of crazy power.

Well you are good to go then

Its all about your business (or hobby !) my video business cannot justify a Scarlet yet

If yours can then - bingo - you are good to go

Fill in the form hit buy

In 2005 I bought a hassy + back because most of the 8mp at the time stills cameras were just not up to 'my requirement'*

The hassy probably saved my 2 gens of DSLR upgrades and therefore some money (and some film costs too)

I can see a good logic for going in at Scarlet straight away - just get it over with and get shooting!

S

*my requirement was to start working for a magazine that only accepted slide at the time.. I got in and worked for them for 7+ years (now they would publish an image off an iPhone no doubt)

Fred,

You need to factor in memory cards (REDMAGs) too. The 64 GB SSD included in the bundle will only get you about 30 minutes of footage, & will take 45 minutes to backup to two drives over Firewire 800. Want to shoot all day without downloading...add $7k.

Handheld outdoors in bright Sun...add $3200 for the Bomb EVF. More if you want to actually attach it to the camera.

Cage? Handles? Shoulder rig?

The Scarlet's a deal, but I'd be factoring $25-30 without lenses.

Best,
Bern

Yeah,

I thought about all those costs, but once I got the base system, 15.000, I can complete step by step.
the most critical are the SSD wich I find the price insane.

I was also aware of the back-up time but it's not so problematic in my workflow.

Even reaching 25-30 in the end, this is the cost of a MF camera+back, and not even the high-end ones. And I know the Scarlet will give me much more.

But for the moment it's saving and who knows...maybe in a few months Canon will release a "Red-Killer" 4K. at 5.000 euros.

It is a possibility.

I say this because the 22mp of the 5d2 was really a 'low end digiback' killer

It usually takes 3-4 years (IMO) for corporate japan to catch the bleeding edge independents

Mr Jannard may be better funded than 2005 PhaseHasImacon so maybe his has bought a little more time...

Dream on!
A Canon 4k Red killer, will still sell as hot cakes even at 10000 euros. There is not reason for any manufacturer to sell anything like that at less.
Canon sells the c300, which does not kills anybody, for 15k....

As for the original topic, there is a simple answer, which is what sony put on their head line for the fs 100 ad.

The 5d seems a naive camera now in some ways - too good too cheap - but stills wise - canon were very happy to release a P25 killer
