I believe that the official announcement will be made tomorrow.

With the new Canon 5DMk3 now on sale in UK at £2995, the Nikon D800 at £2395 looks the clear winner.

While a healthy amount of skepticism is always in order, if you will read the article in its entirety, you will see that it is well sourced and documented.

Seems a bit less than a perfect camera, doesn't it?  It's a shame that the demands of the marketplace, i.e., rush the camera out before it is really thought through, are significantly more important to Nikon (or Canon or Sony, just to name the top three) than are the needs of the photographer, particularly the professionals at whom this camera is aimed.

for me any notions of switching were killed off in an instant. the mkIII is actually looking a quite attractive proposition now as there are quite a few features that will make my shooting easier like the extended multi bracketing and in built level. the files look seem to have no shadow pattern noise and a bit more DR.
i liked the idea of the 100meg tiff but if you can't use essential lenses then no point swapping over.

Ah, it seems like it's a mechanical limitation due to the overhanging built-in flash of the D800 body. Thanks for the link.

This seems to suggest it WILL fit, although I can't really see if the shift "headroom" is enough.

Hi Jaap,

Good catch. It seems odd that Nikon would go through the trouble of producing a product image of a lens/body combination if it doesn't really work together. I mean it doesn't make sense to show such a lens on the D800 body without disclaimer that the distinguishing features of the lens, Tilt and Shift, cannot be used. Yet the other link suggests it can only be used as a normal lens without adjustments. Tilt alone shouldn't produce sensel shading issues either.

Thus, the mystery remains unsolved for now ...

Cheers,
Bart

I just checked with nikon. ( because these PCElenses are my backbones)
It is possible to work with the pce-lenses but for probably only the 24mmPCE you have to change one shift knob for a smaller one at a service station
They say that the same thing has to be done when working with the d300 and d700 bodies

Hi Bart,

Even worse, why develop a camera clearly aimed at the kind of photography TS lenses find most of their use, and subsequently not supporting these lenses.
The answer of Nikon (USA) needs to be more nuanced to say the least, or better yet just clarify this.

While a healthy amount of skepticism is always in order, if you will read the article in its entirety, you will see that it is well sourced and documented.

It was never intended for public consumption. It was an ad agency's concept piece, which is a standard operating practice in advertising. it was meant to sell and idea to company execs. There was no misuse, no fraud, and no attempt to pull the wool over the consumer's eyes.

And a similar thing has to be done with the Canon TS-E 17mm. The lens ships with two different size knobs, the smaller knob making shift movements easier when the lens is attached to a body with built-in flash, such as all of Canon's cropped formats.

Maybe more than an instant should be devoted to the
consideration.  Now we read, as should be expected
(and wanted):
Quote
The 24mm f/3.5 PC-E works with both tilt and shift on the Nikon D800.
Nikon Europe has previously stated the D800 allows full range of adjustment.
This fact was re-confirmed again today by Nikon Nordic.

I'd imagine that not so many are depending on the built-in flash
when using T/S lenses, so issues of its coverage then are irrelevant?!

The 24 PC-E will work fine on the D800, just as it does on the D700. You must turn the lens where the larger knob is away from the flash housing, thats all. The "news" on the internet seems to be pretty full of it lately.
