Hi guys!

Is it theoretically possible to attach Leica S-Lenses to a Phase One DF body? I mean considering constructional aspects such as the flange distance etc.?

Would it be possible to create an S-System Mamiya Adapter?

Does anyone know about the image circle of the Leica system?

I'm not so happy with the wide end of the Phase system and the optical perfection of the leica system is very tempting ...

Just wondering ...

Regards

Paul

AFAIK the S lenses were/ are designed to cover the 45x30mm chip so theoretically they should (just) be able to cover the 44x33 Kodak/ Dalsa sensor but  I'm guessing that their flange focal distance will be too short for the 645 body

Also you will not have any way to control the aperture since it requires some sort of electronic coupling...

They won't focus to infinity.

An easy way to answer such questions for yourself is to see if there are adapters to do it the other way round (Mamiya/PhaseOne lenses onto the S2 body) - and there are. This guarantees that doing it the way you asked is not practical, because they won't be able to reach infinity focus. The adapter would have to have negative thickness!

I suppose if you can achieve negative thickness, maybe you can also achieve negative light!   ;D

+1. In fact they wont be able to focus on more than a couple of meters (may be less), the effect will be the same as the use of an extension ring, they may be good for macro-work though... ::) Regards, Theodoros. www.fotometria.gr

Paul,

Just to reiterate what has already been said, you wouldn't be able to mount S lenses on other medium format systems. The registry distance on the S2 is 53mm. The Mamiya 645 is 63.3mm.  In order for lenses to be adapted, the registry distance of the lens needs to be greater than the registry distance of the camera.

And, just to point out the obvious, if you wanted to use S lenses, an S2 would be your best choice.

Novoflex will be releasing an adapter, very soon. ;)

Hi Brian

as soon as there is an S2 to Canon Adapter available we can use it on the HCam-B1.
probably for all backs and sizes because I´m sure their image circle is large enough.

Greetings from right now Wroclaw/Poland

But just imagine the new Nikon D800 with 36 megapixels and without AA in conjunction with some Leica S glass and Live View!!! That should be possible, shouldn't it?

Mechanically it can be made to fit a Nikon body but you'd have no focus or aperture control.

Yes but there are adapters with built-in apertures and manual focus isn't all that bad with live view. I'd rather pay 3-4k instead of 22k for a body that is obsolete in 2-4 years!

But there is no 36mpx D800 in production Paul, none that I know of anyway..., why don't you try your shelf a D3X instead? Is it because the resolution is ....too low? Regards, Theodoros. www.fotometria.gr
