Updating Mac OS for Lightroom 4
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:17:18 am »

Have never felt the need to keep my Mac OS up to date as my printers work flawlessly. Looks like I will need to do it now for Lightroom 4.
I have 10.5.8.  I could use some help from you Mac gurus.
Do I get the latest update?
Suggestions welcome.

IMHO, update to Snow leopard 10.6.8 and stay there for the moment. Lion still a work in progress.

Regards.

Check your printers are supported in SL this has been a roller coaster ride for older printers.

Printers are Epson 9900 and 3800.
Is this just a download from Apple and go or will drivers need reloaded?
Trying to deceide if I need our IT guy or if it is simple like the Lightroom upgrade.

been running Lion and several Epson printers for quite some time.  No problems, and I like several of the new features in Lion.  Not sure what about it is a "work in progress", it's pretty solid. Heck, it's already to version 10.7.2. (not sure how hard it is to go from Leopard straight to Lion, may need to install SL first?)

Only problem is if you are not on CS5 ... CS3 is challenging, perhaps even CS4.

You will prob. need to install latest drivers from Epson, but both printers should be fine.  You may have to go through some of the clean out of printer stuff, but new epson utility allows complete removal of old driver stuff before you install new drivers.

If you are using a rip it's simpler, as Wayne said you may need the SL update first as Lion is an App store purchase, I have not experience of the new Epson installer.

Am using CS5 and no rip.

Dan- for professional Epson printers I suggest you download the newest drivers from the Epson website. It seems from my reading on the sites that the new Lion ready drivers do indeed fix the double profiling issues that caused dark printing (and other issues) in Leopard and SL. Specifically, I think the latest drivers now play correctly with Apple's ColorSync, in such a way that options available in previous editions of the drivers are now greyed out (and no longer available) when the "correct" print options are selected in LR.

Dave,
I'm assuming you suggest I do this after installing the new OS upgrade?
I really do not want to do anything at all except if I want Lightroom 4 I have to do a OS update.

After the upgrade, remove any existing Epson drivers.  Download the latest versions from Epson and install them. All should be good.

Dan- I debated whether to add that "advice". Let me say, I updated to Lion then uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled the new one. That worked for me. I've had no problems since. Seeing that you waited this long, my only other suggestion would be to possibly wait for 10.7.3 to finally come out.
