Tripod for travelling with Nex7
« on: January 09, 2012, 07:51:17 am »

I'm going on a trip to Turkey and eastern Europe later this year taking a Nex7 mainly for street photography - but I would also like to carry a tripod for the odd landscape work.
It needs to fit in my luggage and be suitably stable.
Any suggestions?
Bob.

Perhaps a Gitzo traveler series (e.g., 1542T)?  Folds up small for travel, pretty light, stable enough for the NEX series.

They have odd landscapes in Turkey?

(Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

I like the Feisol traveler tripod. Around a kilo, reverse folds to fit in a carryon bag. Not too expensive, especially if it's a second tripod.

(No affiliation with either Feisol or the linked company. Just a suggestion from a random internet being.)

Thanks chaps.
I think the Gitzo might be a bit rich for my blood but the Feisol & Induro both look interesting.
I like the fact that they fold for carrying. I especially like that the Feisol ballhead folds into the legs.
They are light but so is the camera.
As I said I'll be mainly shooting hand-held but I wouldn't feel "equipped" without a tripod.
As you know it's always when you don't have it that you need it!
Now to check out the ball heads .....

Actually I think they do - Cappadocia seems pretty weird.

Be aware that the reverse-folding feature cannot be used with most heads, and not at all if you opt for the short center column.

I use a Benro carbon fiber travel angel with Gitzo's baby fluid head... under 3 lbs, holds any small camera (NEX, micro 4/3) very nicely. I once tried putting my D3x on it (with the strap still around my neck in case the tripod collapsed), and it did hold even that behemoth. Not sure I'd try a 10 second exposure with that combination :)

Cappadocia is a dream in spring!

In Europe you can get the chinese brand Sirui for a 70 Euro. It's a small and lightweight tripod. Perhaps this shop can ship it to your hotel in Turkey: http://bit.ly/Aia9Tw

I bought a Giotto Vitruvian Carbon Firbre tripod and swear by it.  For travelling, it's fantastic.  Light, sturdy, small when folded (easily fits into my carry on bag), comes with a good case and is multi-functional.  If you want to use it as a monopod, one leg unscrews and within seconds you can set it up.  First rate.

I have a Gitzo GT0531 with a small Leitz ball head that I use for backpacking. It's 59 cm long collapsed and weights 878 grams. A carry bag will add a bit more weight.

Three leg tripods are more stable and a bit lighter than the 4-leg tripods but with the trade off of being a bit longer when collapsed. The GT0531 is rated for 5kg but I think that's pretty optimistic. It is however, very stable when used with a mirrorless camera (< 1 kg) and the lower set of legs are not extended.
