Unable to synchronize colors on dual monitors
« on: January 01, 2012, 06:30:03 pm »

I've been trying to get the color between two monitors to be synchronized or at least close to the same for almost one year with no success.

My current system configuration:
- Dell Precision T3500
- Intel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz / 2.67 GHz
- Quardro 4000 video card
- 12 GB RAM
- Windows 7 64-bit
- Current on Service Packs and Patches
- (2) Dell U2410 Widescreen Monitors (1920x1200)
- i1 Display Pro Color Calibration

Problem:
- one monitor looks color correct; second monitor looks more red

Troubleshooting path to current situation:
1. upgraded color calibration tool from i1 Display 2 to i1 Display Pro
    Results: no change
2. replaced Dell 2405 and Dell 2408 monitors (both 1920 x 1200 resolution)
    Results: no change
3. replaced Nvidia Quadro FX1800 video card with Quadro 4000
    Results: no change

I'm looking for any suggestions, as I'm running out of options.

Thanks in advance.

Does the Quadro 4000 or the FX1800 support two LUT's?  If not, that's your problem and frankly the only problem it could be providing your not totally missing the boat somewhere with the software.

I don't think the Quadro cards support dual LUT's.. that's where I'd start.  Try a $75 ATI Eyefinity card and I'll bet you can apply your profiles to each one.. This may not be the card you want to stick with, if you need workstation cards you may need to add a second 4000.. but at least it would show you what different a two LUT card will make.

You can also google and download any number of LUT utilities that will query your system and tell you how many LUT's you have supported..

I'm not familiar with the term LUT.

The Quadra 4000 and the Quadra FX 1800 both have two displayport slots.

You do bring up another option.. I could put the Quadra FX 1800 in another PCI Slot and run each monitor independently.  There is an open space.

LUT (look up table) is where the information is stored that profiles each monitor.  You have internal and external LUT's.  Monitors like yours require and external LUT provided by the video card.  If you don't have two, you will never be able to have two profiled monitors working side by side.  You could rig it to work one or the other, but not both at the same time.

Did you run the utility on each monitor?  This would be your first step.. verify if you have a LUT available on each monitor or not.

How many physical ports you have is unrelated to how many LUT's your card has.

And yes, you could put two video cards side by side.. and since you already have both it would be a good option to try, but it's always a better idea to run two of the same cards to avoid issues with software.
