Help me decipher MacPro 3 - " 4x2/ X1900XT/ 500 "
« on: December 22, 2011, 09:16:58 pm »

Hi all,

I have the opportunity to purchase a "4-5 year old" Mac (tower), and the specs that the seller has given me are:

 MacPro 3 -  4x2/ X1900XT/ 500.

The machine, he thinks has "quad cores and twin drives" - presumably he means twin CD/DVD burner/super drives ?

This machine's hard drive has apparantly been reformatted, and is "running fast"...

Can anyone please tell me if this would be a good purchase for using as my primary desk top for image workflow ? I am using a MacBook Pro now, and it ties up too much of my time to not have a designated computer, especially when processing large sets of wedding RAW files....

Would a machine this old still be able to run the newer OS X Lion, and associated updates that I have for my software ?

Any tech heads, please feel free to answer in simple man's language.. it is obvious the seller and myself aren't overly geeky in the terminology of what's actually on the INSIDES of a mac tower !!!

Hope to hear some replies soon...

Cheers
Rich.

This seems to be a first generation Mac Pro (maybe 3 ghz, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard drive) it's a good computer, the graphic card is a little weak but runs Photoshop decently.... kernel in Lion runs in 32 bits mode but doesn't seem to slow down the computer.

It has been my primary machine for the last 4 years and I'm still happy.

If the price is right, go for it.

Ask him to run a system profile and email the result to you. Then at least you'll know what the hardware is.

Apple -> About this Mac, then click "More info". File -> Save.
