DB and unfiltered tungsten lighting - any issues ?
« on: December 20, 2011, 02:21:12 pm »

I'm wondering if any of you have experience with shooting tungsten lighting, without using color correcting filters , but color correct the files in the Raw converter (Leaf Capture).

I'll be using my Aptus 75 in the studio, and need the results to be neutral in color .

The lights will be Dedolights, Arris and such, all proper halogen tungsten lamps .

I’ve done this in an emergency, doing grey balance on my Aptus 22. Here are some examples:

Screenshots from C1 showing two frames of a session; first frame shot with daylight balance (available fluoros, tungsten, daylight).

Grey-balanced on leather vest; close.

This one was balanced on the Aptus, using the OOF grey table on the RHS of the frame as the neutral target (seemed a little warm to me).

Painting on MLKSHK.

If doing colour-critical work such as art repro, you can use greyscales or colour-checker cards to maintain control. You can also check histograms in Photoshop to see if there is any combing; 48 bits is a lot of information, so I haven’t seen any problems yet.

Hello,

I use Dedo’s when shooting table top product, food and cars using my Leaf Aptus 75 and have no issues with colour correction in CS5 ACR.

Cheers

I shoot with Dedos any time I can, they're such great lights.

Just remember that if you're dimming them your K will drop a couple of hundred degrees at low power compared to full. They're typically a  little cooler than my Arris. That of course depends on the bulb in the Arri.

In my studio Dedo's run 3200K to 3400K and Arris 2900K.

Just be aware that shooting under tungsten stresses the blue response of the chip. Remember only 1/4 of all the photo sites are blue response and the amount of blue light in tungsten is very, very low. As a result, you'll end up with noisier captures under tungsten when daylight balanced. Note adding even 1/2 or 1/4 CTO blue to the lights helps a lot. Alternatively, this is a case where ETTR can also help reduce the noise and improve SNR. In any case, this is a situation where you don't want to underexpose and try to make big moves in post.
