Banff winter solstice
« on: December 14, 2011, 12:12:54 pm »

Hi,
I'll be in Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise next week. Any especially good locations this time of year for mountains? The forecast is sun.
This is a photosite so I attach a summer picture.
Thanks!
Scott

You don't have to travel too far out of Banff to get good mountain shots. Try over towards Lake Minnewanka, or west into the Kootenay Nat Park.  Of course there's also north on the Icefileds Parkway. You're really spoiled for choice in this area. TBH the last place I'd go is Lake Louise - far too commercialised and spoiled for my liking. Whoever decided it would be a good idea to build that monstrosity of a hotel in such a beautiful spot needs taking outside and shooting  ;D

Here's a shot taken from the main street in Banff itself - lovely town, really enjoyed my stay there:  http://www.dewisant-photography.net/dewi_sant_photography_canada_2.htm

Well, there won't be much trouble finding a mountain scene.....  Here are a few of my favorite locations in the area (I live nearby)

1. Sunrise at Castle Junction (Just east of Lake Louise on Hwy 93 at the river)

2. Elbow Falls (East of Canmore and along the Bragg Creek Road)

3. Johnson Canyon (along Hwy 1A near Lake Louise)  This can be a bit icy to walk in winter, crampons are your friends... Here are the upper falls.

4. Sunrise at Vermillion Lakes (just outside Banff)

Hope this helps and that you have a great time!

Thanks, Dewi! L Louise is indeed on the appalling side.
Thanks for the specifics, Jon, and these gorgeous pictures. I'll see what I can do.

Two days was just enough time to get good and frustrated.  ;D Here's another of the upper falls.

Hey, I like this angle a lot Scott!!  Glad you had a 'good' time.... There is a lot to photograph in this area. At least you had decent weather - we spent a bit of time out there as well so we may have passed each other on the road!
