24 inch printers
« on: December 10, 2011, 01:42:33 pm »

I'm looking for a 24" printer. The Epson 7900 seems suitable but I worry about the age of the technology. I'm looking to create photographs suitable for framing. But I don't know what newer machines would surpass the 7900 at this time.

Isn't this their latest model ?  I have the 4900,  which has pretty much the same technology.  The point is that  it is a mature technology,  and believe me,  you can get prints suitable for framing.   The question is whether it's any good right now,  not if something better is coming down the pike.  At this point the improvements are going to be in tiny increments.  It's a good moment to buy a digital printer, and the 7900 is awesome.

I recently went through the shopping process as well. Regarding something better, ask yourself this; Is it even possible to achieve anything better than what the 7900 is capable of producing? Since I have got my 7900 the print quality is absolutely stunning. The printer is built with very high quality, very easy to set up and the user interface is simple to use. It's a fantastic printer and there are some smoking deals on it right now too!

If you always are waiting for the latest and greatest, then you'll always be waiting...and wanting....and waiting.
In this age of technology, there will always be something different(hopefully-but not necessarily-better) to come at a future date.
Don't wonder what will come. Experience what is available now so that you'll have a better reference of what to expect later.

I'm using the Canon 6300 24" and on Ilford Smooth Pearl I can get a slightly deeper black (L=2.5 as opposed to L=3.5) and a slightly wider gamut than on the Epson 7900 on the same paper. This is something I have tested myself, not conjecture.

You will be happy with either printer I suspect, but this is just what I have found.
