pictures to compare D3line/D700 to H4d 31/40
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:16:40 am »

Hi all

there are lots of specs comparison and even some reviews on the web.
Though they are all useless as there is no relevant picture comparison to show the differences without pixel peeping.
For me what really matters are nicer colors (without having to sit for hours at the computer) and plasticity.
Does anybody have comparisons or links to comparisons?

best regards

O,
Photoartsmonthly.com did comparison review of the previous generation H3D-31 and the Nikon D3. I believe they also have a review of the H4D-40.

Hope this helps.

I think Kenrockwell actually did something almost kinda good here, partially because it was done by someone else.....he compares a H3D-22 (if thats the right name its a 22mp back on a H3D so probably) and a D3..... http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3/h3d-1.htm ..... While it is not a H3D 31 or 40 it does show you the IQ difference between the 35mm ff sensor and a nice big medium format sensor.

Also on my Flickr Page..... http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianhirschfeldphotography/ ..... I have images from H4D-50 (Rented), H3Dii-39ms (was mine) where you can clearly see the differences in tonal quality, dynamic range, resolution, etc..... hope that helps :)

I will let you judge, the D700 file is adjusted in white balance and tone slightly. HB File standard setting.
Both taken with minimum power on the strobes, d700 with a grey filter(3 stops).

I did not write on purpose if MF or Nikon.
What I can say is that color are much nicer with the HB then what I did with the P1 few weeks ago.

ähem you might argue on the focus, its not on spot with all of them, I could just say D700 with 85 1.4G is able to deliver similar sharpness. I wonder if you guys see a value in the color.
btw: test was a H3DII-31

To me, the first picture in the set has more 'dimension' to it when I look at the near cheek and at the chin.  I don't know if it's just a different in the DOF (there is more in this first picture than in the second) or if it's the fact that it's a larger sensor (I'm guessing the first shot is MF and the D700).  The focus point seems a little in front of the far eye in the second picture as well, which also might make it harder to compare the two.

I do like the tones better in the second shot, but that's easy enough to play with in post...

Simple buy the D700.

Why don't u compare it with Phase one?

Anyway, just spend less, and be happy and stop complaining.

first is HB and second is d700, you can see the crop differences so it's an easy one.
Skin tones are better in the HB, there is also this glow on the skin the D700 does not have.
I would not know how to get that in post process and how long this takes.
Is it worth buying a HB? Currently I have the D700, here used with the very best glass(85mm 1.4g) which I don't have in other dimensions (50,35 or 24-70 are not on same level).

I did shot with the phase one, did not have it anymore on this shooting for direct comparison in the same setup. I can just say the skin was much more redish and ugly.

Were you using the Phase One Portrait Profile or Phase One Flash (generic product) profile in Capture One?

I did not change any setting in c1. I did not find c1 intuitive and it crashed many times.
For outdoor use with shutter speeds lower 1/800 seems mor tempting though, specially with flash.
If i see the pic without adjustmens, i personally prefer hasselblad over all.
If it would be possible to create a preset to apply similar look that would be cool :)

The Skin being more "reddish and ugly" is simply because a MFDB will capture considerably more data then the full-frame D700. As big as the D700's sensor is a MFDB's even with an equivalent Mp count (I'm referencing like D3x vs Mamiya DM22) will always have more data recorded because of their "big pixels" (the MFDB's). So you have to accept a file from a MFDB, as a canvas to use to get the picture you want. While there are still plenty of times where a MFDB image is amazing and perfect straight ooc there are many more times where there are things you will have to adjust, for example white balance (reddish) and possibly something like luminance or photoshop to make things look prettier (ugly skin).

Using a MFDB is an entirely different experience to using a full-frame DSLR. While they should be compared by a user looking to upgrade or change their camera, they cannot be equally weighted because of their major differences, which should be understood before embarking on a test.

@Brian

the red is much more in the D700 then in the H3d-31. and its most in the p40+(P1).
So its not really an MF Issue as far as I see, maybe in H4d-40 it would be a different story again.
