Torridon - Scotland
« on: November 18, 2011, 12:34:35 pm »

Some images from Torridon in Scotland. Since 2008 every year I spend at least a week in Scotland and this time for the first time I went to Torridon (first by plane to Edinburgh). I will be back there next year as I now have better knowledge of some good spots. It is not far away from photographers paradise that is the Isle of Skye but here you can see much less people, less cars, less houses ...

Blimey, Assynt, and it's not raining, misty, blowing a gale, snowing, raining again, then going dark, before becoming lightish, with more rain, low cloud & even more rain than you could shake a stick at. Lucky you. Beautiful spot though.

Thank you :) in truth it was raining like hell since 3AM until 11AM :) so my morning session at Shieldaig was compromised and the walk by Loch Clair and Loch Coulin was in rain ;)

I bet there were midgies. Thousands of the little buggers.

Not in May there wasn't. Too early in the season.

I was in the Cairngorms in the summer. Met a bloke at Loch Etrachan, on his way from Ben Macdui to Loch Avon, where he was set to camp. Having camped the night before in the valley just up from Derry Lodge, I knew the midgies were bad. He had no head-net. I expect them to report the discovery of his exsanguinated corpse anyday now.

This is OT to the image, but a small but dedicated group of Canadian Wildlife Service biologists up in Canada's northern tundra bared their arms and legs while a volunteer went around counting biting insects.  The finally numbers were as many as 9,000 bites/ minute, enough to cause total exsanguination in about four hours, although you'd have gone mad long before then.  The insects can cause the caribou herds to stampede and sometimes the only way to make an image is to set the camera on a tripod, set up the timer and walk away, bringing the 'gray cloud' with you.

Mike.

P.S.  Nice picture too!
