Profiling a Lenovo T520 laptop
« on: November 17, 2011, 07:44:50 pm »

Awhile ago I purchased an NEC Multisync LCD 2690WUXi monitor along with their Spectraview profiling system which consisted of the Spectraview II software and the Eye-One DIsplay 2 calibrator puck. I have the monitor profiled and am very happy with it.

Recently I purchased a T520 Lenovo lap top with the i7 2630 CPU, 8 GIGS of RAM and the FHD screen that they offer (for a $200 premium). I bought it primarily to run Lightroom 3.5 and Photoshop CS5. I need to profile it, but the Spectraview II software won't do it (I tried: it doesn't recognize the "monitor").

On researching the X-Rite site I discovered that the i1 Display 2 is a discontinued item. The software mentioned in conjunction with it is iMatch 3, which I don't have and can't see any way to get.

Is there any way I can solve this without investing in a whole new profiling kit? I remember somewhere on this forum it being mentioned that X-Rite had some free software available but I have lost the details.

Appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I believe you can still download the software from X-Rite to use that product (unless you have a NEC branded i1D-2, then maybe not).

Yes, it is an NEC branded i1 Display 2.

Yes, it is an NEC branded i1 Display 2.

I’m not sure that will work. You can try going to X-Rite, log in (you need to have a free user account) and I think you can download the software. But being an NEC branded unit, might not work. I can check with NEC about that.

I'm almost 100% certain that there's absolutely nothing wrong with Spectraview II (or your MDSVSENSORII). :) I'd betcha anything that your laptop uses an integrated Intel Graphics card and THAT is why it doesn't work. Intel doesn't play well with DDC. You can try downloading version 1.09 of Spectraview and then connecting a USB cable from your laptop to the monitor and seeing if that works but, I don't believe this functionality is supported in the 2690. The PA series DOES support this so if you're using an NEC PA series monitor on a laptop with an Intel graphics card, or via a Thunderbolt/mini DisplayPort port (which seems to not play well with DDC either at the moment) you can bypass those issues by using a USB cable. Unfortunately I think you're SOL.   :( :( :(

Here's the link to the 1.09 update:

You dind't get the point. He wants to calibrate his laptop display.

But Spectraview II only supports NEC displays - so it will never work with his laptop display.

D'OH!!!!! Yeah, I misread that entirely. Thanks for the catch :-)

In that case... there's always Argyll CMS which is free (and produces excellent results). There is a different "cost" though which is a very high learning curve if you're not comfortable working with a command line interface. There is a GUI out there that makes it a little easier but you still have to get it configured properly (not sure what that's like on Windows, under OS X it requires a little bit of familiarity with how the UNIX command line works).

Cheers, Joe

I know that this is absolutely no help to you at all ...  ;D ...
But perhaps you should have gotten the W520 which has built in calibration goodies (from X Rite).
I've had mine for about 2 months, and am quite pleased so far. Not quite as good as my NEC 2490, but not too shabby for a non IPS display.

I looked again at X-Rite and found version 3.6.2 od iMatch and succeeded in downloading it. It ran on mylaptop but kept getting positioning errors. I tried adjusting to position of the puck to no avail. However it offered the option to continue despite the error, which I did. It completed and produced a .icc profile. Now I need to test the profile and I think I'm good to go.

Thans to everyone who chimed in.
