H4D-31 vs H4D-40
« on: November 17, 2011, 04:24:24 am »

Hi all

did anybody have the chance to compare those two Systems?
I don't really need the 40mpx for print size, and it might also slow down my computer and/or fill my HD.
So I wonder if there are differences in colors, skin tones, ISO(lets say at 800, or is this already better on a D700?), depth or something else u realized.
I'm not taking about facts that can be read on the tech specs but how it matters in real life.
Also I would be happy not to spend to much time on the computer and get great results out of cam.
I'm mostly shooting fashion and beauty, Art and some advertisement.

I hope to hear from you :)

thanks
O

currently I'm using D700,50mm,85mm,24-70mm and 70-200.

I have shot both side by side (I own a 31) and the 40 is better. Better colours (esp reds) and easily a stop better ISO performance (IMO more like 2).

Aditionally the latest firmware upgrade for the H4D-60 will be made available to the H4D-40 but not to the H4D-31.

Ok thanks for the answers!

I'm would have the option to get a 40 used(Demo) for about 3000 more then the 31 new.Question is it worth the extra money...
A new 40 is not something I can afford, a used 40 over my budget but if I spend that money, the cam needs to be good. It needs to be amazing actually.
So if it is really noticeable with bare eye then I should save up more. I don't pixel peep though in this range.

I'm using d700 and tested a refurbished P40+ with the result: not worth the money to upgrade for my application, its even much more expensive then H4D-40.
Capture1 was crap, crashed constantly and left digital color lines in some pics.

What I'm looking for are this really cool hasselblad colors, can they be produced in d700 in Photoshop?

I upgraded from Contax 645/Leaf 65 to new H4D-40.
The H4D camera is same easy to handle as Contax, but very fast and accurate.
I installed new firmware today, which provides useful functions, that will not be available in the 31 model.
I'm very happy with H4D.

Every time I read an informed comment like this, I curse PhaseOne for how they stupidly missed out on the best Kodak CCDs (the 6 micron series that Hasselblad, Pentax and Leica use), thus depriving us Mamiya shooters of their enhanced high ISO and long exposure performance.

There's a certain diabolical irony that Hasselblad can't (or won't) get long exposures out of their low dark-noise Kodak sensors; while PhaseOne, masters of long exposure electronics, partnered with high dark-noise Dalsa for all their latest sensors, and so can't get long exposures out of them either!

I'm telling you, if I could get infinity focus with my Mamiya lenses (inexpensive stunners like the 24/4 fisheye, 80/1.9 and 200/2.8 APO) on a Pentax 645D, I'd never look back. But Catch 22, the Pentax has the thicker body.
In frustration, I've even looked at the Leica S2, which will comfortably hit infinity with the M645 lenses; but it would need to be at Pentax pricing to work for me, and that ain't going to happen either.  :(

In the other hand they have the IQ series with up to 80mpixels and sensor plus.
So one for the other :)

ORC73, I was wondering what the outcome was... do you ever decide on going with the 31 or the 40 and if so, are you satisfied.  Like you, I shot a D700 and I'm toiling with the idea of going up to one of the Hassy's.  Any feedback would be most appreciated.

This shocks me, I was studying the h4d31 as an upgrade and it is almost discarded it because I'm so happy with C1 that want to keep using it as my main raw developer.

If you do this, get the H4-40. Faster camera, much better high ISO, and Truefous is very valuable if you shoot people.

I hesitated also for a while between a H4D31 and a H4D40 and I am so glad I put that little extra money.

Currently, some people are upgrading to an H5, so you should be able to buy a used one for the price of a new H4D31.

P.S. I guess you know the H4d31 is delisted now, so they are just selling out their old stock. No more software updates for the H4D31.

C'est la vie!

But they are working hard with Dalsa to get over that hump.

The H4D-40 to me is the better choice, even if the H4D-31 was still available. Better color, maybe a stop better ISO (2 stops may be a bit strong, but YMMV). Along with the H4D-40/H5D-40, the 31 megapixel sensor used in the H3D-31/H4D-31 (and Phase One P30+) is the only other high ISO capable sensor above 20+ megapixels for medium format. But also an advantage in favor of the H4D-40 over the H4D-31 is long exposure (H4D-31 limited to 30 seconds). The H4D-40 will do over 4 minutes (we recently tested it against a P45+ and the results were comparable).

Right now, Hasselblad is promoting H4D-40 kits with no lens for $12,995.
