Landscape Lens for Canon Mark IV
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:07:44 am »

Hello,
I have a Canon Mark IV (which has an APS-H) sensor (1.3X crop I believe), and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what some of the best Scenic lenses might be for use with this camera, obviously taking into account the crop factor of the sensor.

Thanks ahead of time for your input. I hope everyone is having a great day, and had some good shooting this Fall.

Sort of depends on what angle of view you like. The 24-70 and 24-105 are good lenses for landscape work. For a wider view, I find my Sigma 12-24 provides better quality images than my Canon 16-35/2.8 II. But it has to be shot around f/11 or even f/16, and so requires a tripod, which is not a big deal for most landscape and architectural work. For a longer view, I love my 70-200/4 IS lens, not least for the light weight.

Thanks K.

I realized after reading your reply that I should have specified "wide angle scenic lens". I have been in situations out in the Rockies/Wyoming, etc. where, my 500 F4 was my scenic lens of choice, reaching out to isolate some distant scene.

However I am looking for recommendations for a wide angle scenic lens. I attended a Presentation quite a while ago by a regionally well known, well published scenic photographer, and I believe he said that, overall he tended to shoot most of his scenics between 18 and 22 mm (of course that was in the Northeast U.S. with generally shorter line of sight). Given that, and the 1.3X crop that I have on the Mark IV, I would think that going with something like a 24mm would not be wide enough. Obviously I can do a Search and find a listing of wider lenses, but I was hoping for some feedback from people who have used specific lenses and are happy with them.
Thanks very much for your input, it's greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the 17-40L. I am quite happy with mine and it seems to be well-regarded on this forum.

An interesting alternative (well, it's interesting to me :)) is the Samyung 14mm. MF only. I don't own it myself but have been intrigued by the images in this thread:

18mm equivalent on a 1.3 crop, and very reasonably priced.

+1 for the 17-40 on a APS-H camera.

The Samyung 14 mm looks interesting. Another alternative would be the Sigma 12-24 but opinions are very positive or very negative on this lens. Here's a review: http://www.juzaphoto.com/article.php?l=en&article=42  (it's on a FF camera but it gives you an idea of the performance of each lens).

I'm getting by quite happily with the Canon 15-85 for most things and the 10-22 otherwise.

Scott,
Unfortunately, those two lenses shouldn't work on a 1.3x sensor.

16-35 mk II also works well, (which is what I use).
