Won one...
« on: November 09, 2011, 07:42:13 pm »

Just found that I won a merit award in the new issue of "B&W and Color." It's a pure street photograph but I made the mistake of titling it "Midnight Guitarist," so they put it in the "Music" section. Seems to me I posted it on here sometime during this past summer.

Russ congratulations!

Is your photograph in the current December issue? I have some copies, but have not looked through them cover to cover yet. (I'm also in the December issue)

Here's the thread you posted the shot in back in March.

Thanks, Jennifer. I was pretty sure I'd put it up on LuLa. Here it is again.

And it shows again that the Foot of Man can be almost as important as the two Hands of Man.

Right, Eric, but that time he was using his hands to play.

Then again, I've heard people playing with their hands sound as if they were using their feet.

Thanks, Michael. I think it'll be around indefinitely. Painters have been doing monochromes throughout history, even though color has been available since the days of cave paintings. For one thing, certain kinds of art -- street photography comes to mind -- depend on masses shapes and lines for composition, and can become bewilderingly complex in color. Also, in photography, color can be unmanageable. As Cartier-Bresson pointed out, you can't get around the immutable rules of color relationships. Complementary colors enhance each other, anologous colors reduce each other. Certain colors appear to advance. Others appear to retreat. A painter can control color relationships. A photographer can't, though he can make some modifications later in post-processing. The other thing is: B&W just looks damn good!

I agree 100%. After enjoying the dazzle of being able to do color for the past few years (since I went digital), I have happily gone back to doing mostly B&W now. I find it much more satisfying, on average.
