google maps -- 52.151410, -10.477095
« on: November 08, 2011, 05:43:55 am »

New to here... excuse pic formatting... cheap and nasty.

Nik D700, 14-24, on tripod... No PP except downsizing from NEF.

Last hours of last day of November holidays... had just been for a swim (14C water... refreshing!).

Pic reflected mood... dark(ish) past... bright(ish) future.

Gentle newbie C&C welcome.

Hi There, and welcome to the list!

As to your image, it's passable, but I'm immediately put off by the foreground rock.  It dominates the image, and yet it's too dark/lacking in detail to hold any interest.  It becomes an 'anchor' without purpose.  I would have elevated the camera to capture more of the interesting part of the scene, the water and the sky and left off much of the shore in front.

Hi and welcome!

I'm with Mike on this one. The black rocks/foreground keep the eyes glues to the bottom of your image.

Just curious... why? Was it a jpeg?

Hi S... it was originally full size NEF... I loaded into ExifPro (I use this to do a 1st selection)... and downsized it (also ExifPro... maybe not the best choice)... and saved it as JPG.

Concerning the C&C from F & M... I thank you for your frankness. Indeed, the dark rocks do pull the eye. Maybe raising shadows there would help... or maybe just make it worse! There was a gale that day (120kkM/h the day before) and the sea was very agitated... and I did not fancy getting any closer to the edge. Ahh well... still striving.

Sorry, my bad, I should have noticed in your first post that it was a Nikon RAW file. However, my question still stands: why no post-processing?

No probs S... I like that body/lens combination... no PP because I believe in the spirit of getting it right in the 1st place. In this case, I feel that cropping this pic would negatively impact the overall balance.

Gerald,
I'm sure that getting closer wouldn't help much... unless you manage to snap a good one during the fall.

Keep posting your photos and don't risk your health!
