I recently picked up an Epson 4900 to replace my ageing Epson 2100 (great matte printer, rubbish gloss printer) and so I've been experimenting heavily with various papers and have settled on Harman by Hahnemuhle Gloss Baryta as my preferred gloss media (Photo Rag is still winning the war for matte, although Sugarcane is giving it a run for its money...). I have run all of the commonly available tests for deciding the optimum media type settings and can honestly say to the naked eye there is no difference between PLPP, PGPP, PSGPP and PSMPP. When I checked the dmax the PSMPP won but had a reduced gamut when compared to the PSGPP, which is the option I am currently using with a custom profile I have made using a 4096 patch chart and am very impressed with the results. I am still experimenting with the various settings and increasing the colour density (don't try 50%, you end up with a puddle of ink...!) and have found it interesting that with this paper it is very difficult to see when it is overinking -there is no smudging of the colours into one another. I wonder what settings others have used, for both the 4900 and other printers, to get the most out of this paper?
