64" fineart papers
« on: October 17, 2011, 08:35:40 am »

Hello,
I'm a long time Hahnemuhle user (first PhotoRag Pearl, then PhotoRag Baryta). I'm looking for a different paper, sized 64 inches (and not less), to use as an alternative to Hahnemuhle - if possible, with similar features (archival lasting, rag or cellulose base, etc).
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

Good luck, If you are insisting on 64" and not 60".
there's nothing I know off outside of HM, and Epson itself.
hope I'm wrong/ wish there was.

Traditional Photo Paper = Exhibition Fiber Paper in USA.  (aka Innova IFA49)
Great surface, lovely results when freshly printed, but full of bad OBA's that fade and yellow quickly, so poor longevity.
avoid.

Ugh!
I've seen the Wilhelm research tests about print longevity for Epson Exhibition and, compared to Hahnemuhle, it seems not that bad - nevertheless I tend to believe users feedback more than official reports  ;)
Yellowish paper sounds really bad.

Anyway, the tests aren't the very same (Hahnemuhle are tested with K3 inks, and Baryta wasn't among the papers - Epson Exhibition is with Ultrachrome HDR), but as a comparation:

Epson Exhib (displayed prints framed under glass): 90 years
Epson Enhanced Matte: 82 years
=======
Hahnemuhle (same conditions):
Fine Art Pearl: 82
PhotoRag Satin 68
PhotoRag Pearl 64
PhotoRag 60

As a sidenote, the only paper from Epson I've found as a 64" roll are the Exhibition and the Enhanced Matte - what a choice...
It really seems that Epson 11880 printer has 4 extra inches that nobody likes to fill...
Regards

Wilhelm doesn't test paper white like Aardenburg-Imaging tests paper whites:

The Innova IFA49 and Moab Colorado Fiber show similar spectral plots so might behave the same. There are more alike.

330+ paper white spectral plots including the Canon USA catalog:

Hi Davide,

in next year Hahnemuhle will not cut paper in 64 inches, only in a 60".
Today Hahnemuhe have only a Photo Rag Ultra Smooth and Photo Rag Baryta in a 64".

Terrible !

Hello Guilherme,
that's exactly the why I was asking about other brands 64" papers. I waited to reveal the why because I was not sure whether Hahnemuhle did officially speak about this or not; anyway, from my sources they will produce the last set of rolls later this year, then in 2012 either PhotoRag Baryta and FineArt Baryta will be cutted 60" only.
It seems to be a marketing issue, nevertheless it looks strange that, worldwide, there's not sufficient need for 64" paper to guarantee its production - we're talking about top-class paper from one of the best manufacturer in the world. At least to me, it looks bizarre.
Poor old Epson 11880, with 4 extra inches that nobody will fill anymore ;)

TKS !

I registry in this forum because this question is very important for my studio !

I believe, if many users from EPSON 1180, like us, mobilize about this question, HAHNEMUHLE, MUSEO, HARMAN and others companys will be forced to cut papers in 64".

We could create a GROUP 64", like a Group f/64 (Edward Weston, Ansel Adams e etc) remember ?

Best Regards
