Cades Cove is nearby. May be crowded with other leaf watchers, though.

Hey I am also planning to go to the Great Smoky Mountains NP :)
My plan is: Wed: Roaring fork + Little River (during a slightly rainy day, if the weather forecast is accurate)
Thur: Either New Found Gap Road (US 441), or Cades Cove
Fri: Either Cades Cove, or New Found Gap
I will bring RVP100 and E100VS and a Contax G2.

Thanks for all your help.

Left Gatlinburg early enough to reach Clingmans Dome just before sunrise.  Lots of photographers there, but lots of room to watch and photograph a great sunrise.  A bit windy, but definitely worth the drive.

Spent the rest of the day slowly, and I mean slowly driving up the Blue Ridge Parkway enjoying the fall colours.  The trip was just fantastic.

again thanks

You might want to detour a bit out of your way to Deals Gap AKA the Dragons Tail lots of scenic overlooks that are not photographed a lot along with the added benefit of photo ops on some very exotic cars and bikes.

SanRaal

Thanks for your input.  Already made it back home, but I am planning another trip for next year and will add the Dragons Tail to my list.
