Phase One PowerPhase
« on: October 13, 2011, 09:06:51 am »

Hello board,
I've been offered a PowerPhase scanning back at a bargain price. I know it was designed to be used in a studio, but wonder if there is any way at all to use it with a battery for landscapes on location?
The unit that I've been offered comes with the cables and the original software.
Thanks in advance,
Nicolas.

[redacted - I misread the question and thought he was asking about using a LightPhase in the field. A PowerPhase scan back is a very very different beast]

Thank you Doug, for the information provided and the authorized dealer advice. I'd love to do so, but I'm based in Patagonia, Argentina and as far as I know, there is no active dealers here. The back I've been offered was used in a closing commercial studio and they are offering it for about 1000-1500 dollars, which I thought is a pretty low price given the stated resolution and color reproduction. I happen to use a 4x5 camera for landscapes and never used a scanning back before, LuLa seems to be the first place to start asking around :)

Crap. I have done you a grave diservice. I read "Lightphase" not "PowerPhase".

Everything I was saying above applies to a "Lightphase" (single shot 6mp back) not to the older scanning backs. Consequently I've redacted it to avoid confusion.

If you scour the forums you'll find a handful using scan backs outside. There are a lot of issues regarding vibration and subject movement (e.g. wind in leaves) but it can be very good quality if the conditions are all perfect. A PowerPhase based on SCSI would be near impossible to use in the field. A PowerPhase FX+ based on Firewire would be challenging but possible. Neither are supported in Capture One and require the legacy scan back software.

That is exactly the info I've been looking for, I see that this particular back is no good for me given the compromises.
Thank you for your time,
Best regards,
Nicolas.

No problem.

The good news is there is a large variety of not-insanely-priced digital backs out there which would be great for untethered field work. We have a pre-owned digital back inventory that is very affordable and a complete Mamiya DM28 kit (back, body, leaf-shutter lens) which is under US$11k.

The pre owned list is very interesting, I'll take a careful look there,
Thanks

Hi Dough

the Powerphase FX was supported by Capture One 2.x or 3.x as a last version ?
I always wanted to have one - we used a Dicomed scanback and  later a Photophase scanner (107Mbyte) but the FX was always on my wishlist.
I think this would even be the only thing that would make me dig out my 8/10" from storage and use it again for paintings and repros.
Any cheap offers in the US that you know of ?

We have a pre-owned and warrantied PowerPhase FX (Firewire) in stock. It uses "Image Capture" (not to be confused with the OSX application by the same name). They released a version of this software which was compatible with Snow Leopard; no plans for a Lion compatible version (or any future development).

Perhaps we can arrange a Hartblei equipment <> FX swap?? I'd email info@captureintegratoin.com.

Hi Dough

Ah - as you say it - I remember Image capture and I also remember why I forgot about it.....:-(
But good to know, I still have files that I made with our scanners that exceed todays backs, especially the repro stuff.

Thanks - I will think about it.
