Best paper for screw post books?
« on: October 12, 2011, 07:13:46 am »

I need advice on which paper choices would work best for my following needs:

1. I plan to print 11x17

2. I plan to insert the prints into a screw post album like this one:

3. I'm open to either two-sided or single-sided paper

4. I want paper that will give me quality as good as the only paper I use now, which is Epson Ultra Premium Luster.

5. The paper needs to bend easily enough because the viewer will be flipping pages. I don't want to have to use a paper weight to keep the prints flat, nor do I want to damage the paper with creases while trying to hold the book open.

I probably should try the following because they come with the photo album i want to buy. Any winners?

Joey L. chose this paper so maybe this one is a better one?

Also, I'm suspecting that I will have no choice but to print on matte paper because the resin ones won't work in a book because they are too rigid. (I know the Epson Exhibition Fiber would never work--too rigid).

MY HOPE:  to find a paper that uses Photo Black PK ink like the Espon Luster but that is also flaccid enough for my screw post book. I'd rather not print on matte because it dulls the colors and the blacks (D-max). Unless there exists a matte glossy paper?  I guess I could also use matte but treat it with a varnish to enrich the colors and blacks.

Do you see where I'm headed. I'm new to printing and can use some help in this very specific direction I'm headed.

A screw post book isn't made to lay flat like you want it to. If you look at the pictures of Joey's port you'll see he's creased the pages folding them over.

If I were making this book, I would pick a paper that suits my intentions and images. I would score the paper so that it folds where I want it to and I wouldn't have any image within an inch or so of the gutter.

If you absolutely must have a lay flat book, look at some other type of book. You can probably get a flush mount done for not much more than the cost of producing this screw mount book on really nice paper. Otherwise, find a book binder in your area that can assemble your prints into an album.
