Fuji X10 camera
« on: October 07, 2011, 09:18:10 pm »

Hello,

Now this is going to be the camera I am getting the Christmas.

It has every thing the Fuji X100 has plus a zoom lens. Its traditional in looks and functionality with its old style controls which suits a old bugger like me and most of all a view finder so I don’t need my glasses, perfect.

Looks like my Canon G10 is going on Trade Me (New Zealand's version of EBay)

Cheers

Simon

Way down deep inside of me, I truly believe that Canon will come out with a competitive new product in early 2012 so I'm going to hold on to my G12, put my pennies in a mayonaise jar and wait a while.

+1.
Hope so, for a respective Canon G successor.
Nikon seems to have failed in this discipline (for my purposes).

Hello,

A couple of other features I like about this camera is the traditional zoom ring compared to my Canon G10 and also it can mount filters on the front with the additional lens hood. So when I am sunning my self in Rarotonga this summer I can attach a polarizer to enhance that tropical feel.

Cheers

I got my X10 pre-ordered a few weeks ago.
I'll be happy if it arrives before Christmas, but I'm not counting on it; there are plenty of rumours about first deliveries being delayed till Feb.

This is a slightly reckless purchase (for me) given the lack of decent sample images and no reviews.
The handful of images released by Fuji are rubbish for evaluating IQ, but do show that the X10 has loads of potential (in the right hands).

Not the same viewfinder either.

Hello,

What appeals to me is the ergonomics of the camera such as the classic zoom ring and its F2.0-2.8 speed. Also the CMOS sensor should be better that what I am getting with my G10.

This is not going to replace my work cameras its a every day keep in the glove box take shots of the kids on holiday camera.

Cheers

I'm also waiting for this eagerly, since it ticks most of the boxes I'd like to have on my "goeseverywherewithme" camera.

-Shoots RAW (the most important for me)
-Optical viewfinder
-Reasonably fast lens and it has a moderate zoom
-Image stabilization
-Slightly larger sensor than most compacts
-Manual zoom ring
-A hot shoe, not so much for on camera flash, but my Skyport should fit there nicely for some OCF action
-Decent macro mode
-Last but not least a beautiful design and IMHO the best looking digital compact ever produced

That is my reasoning for spending money on it in the future.

I  have been looking at the X10 for replacing my current walk around camera. Seems like a very good all around camera and also looks very good, but I have decided to go with the X100, mainly because of the sensor size. I am also drawn to the X100's fixed lens, my Canon kit is almost purely primes, I like to work with a fixed focal length, I feel I can better concentrate on composition that way.

Hi Simon

Thank you very much, I appreciate that. Need some more commercial stuff in there though, you got plenty of that, looks very good!

Me too!
There have been some promising looking samples floating around the web, but there is a lot of inconsistency in the stated opinions.
For example, although the ISO 100 samples are showing a hint of noise at 100%, some of the ISO 1600 samples are shockingly clean. Some people are calling the lens soft at f2, but there are samples which are impressively sharp at f2, even right up to the edges.
But then I've also seen one image called soft which was taken at f7.1 which was almost certainly diffraction; poor technique.

Hence I'm very much looking forward to an authoritative opinion.

Thanks Michael very much for keeping your promise and putting down
your  impressions of the X10.

Framed from your discerning points made about "serious compacts" on Canon G-series compacts over
three years (G7(2006), G9(2007) and G10(2009) ), I find your review of the x10 to really whet my appetite for
my next visit to the camera store to examine Fuji's focus on mechanical build, lens/sensor quality, & ergonomics.

P.S. Does the x10 have a battery level indicator?

How is its autofocus performance, especially in low light (EV3-5 or so)?

Also, is the shutter button crisp or mushy?

Sounds like a promising take-everywhere camera.

Likeable compact camera. Given the technology today, increased size of the sensor at least a bit and the design of the zoom lens it looks like an interesting compact. Looking at the whole package, Fuji brings some fresh air into this segment no doubt. Nice review I really enjoyed as always.
