Fine Debris in Epson Cold Press Bright
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:52:22 pm »

I am new to this forum and new to fine art printing, and I have a question about Cold Press Bright. I made my first 17x22 print yesterday with Epson CPB on my 4900 and, after the print was dry, there were probably half a dozen spots in which there had been some very fine debris on the paper (roughly the diameter of a human hair and less than an eighth of an inch long) which subsequently came off leaving a white line where the ink printed on the debris rather than all the way through to the paper. Is this characteristic of this type of paper? Is there a pre-print routine to make sure that a sheet is "clean" and ready to print? Is my printer doing something to cause this debris? (Note that this is a newly opened package of paper....) Thanks for any help you can offer!!

While Sharon's suggestion is good, a horsehair drafting brush works just as well and is 1/4 the price.  See HERE.

Edit added:  It's good practice to brush all papers before printing to remove any loose debris (matte papers because of their coating tend to have more than gloss paper).

+1 on the drafting brush, purchased for just this purpose
now I brush everything before going in the printer (sheet fed)

Thanks, everyone. Since I'm printing large sheets exclusively, I can see I have to improve my "printer hygiene". I'll make a trip to Blick tomorrow to see if I can pick up a serviceable brush. I appreciate the help!

So I'm not the only one to find debris in Cold Press Bright! I've had 6 boxes of A2 (3 dif batches CE0G06606, C9KA04806 and COEF06602) all with embedded particles in the surface, no amount of brushing will remove it! Rarely shows up under the image but is an eyesore in the borders of limited edition runs. Sent samples back to suppliers to forward to Epson UK in June 2011, but as yet no response from Epson (According to the supplier - who instantly replaced the paper)

For what it is worth, I spoke to Epson Support and they are replacing the package of paper.
