Hack to get decent performance from PS CS5 under 10.6
« on: October 02, 2011, 07:10:55 am »

Just pull down File Info for the Photoshop App and set the app to 32 bit mode.
PS will load faster, ACR will speed up magically, and OTHER apps will speed up too as memory gets available.

...unless you want more than 2GB of RAM assigned to PS.

Sure.

But the rest of you, should try this once, you won't be going back.
Battery life goes up drastically too as pageouts diminish.
Other apps get enough RAM and so don't need to get paged in and app switching gets immediate.

i have 10.6.8 and use sometimes for certain plugs or actions the 32bit mode,
cause some dont run in 64bit. i havent felt any incresement of speed so far.

Edmund, I just tried to find the File Info you're talking about and can't.  Will you please run me through the steps.  Thanks, Jim

Just to be perfectly clear...this advice is bogus...

While it may have some relevance if you are running a laptop with minimal ram, if you are working with a 64 bit OS and have 4 or more gigs of ram, then running Photoshop as a 32bit app is gonna give up 10-15% in speed and bring your ram allocation to way below what you get with running Photoshop as a 64 bit app. Camera Raw run as a 32 bit app will be slower than running as a 64 bit app. Take that to the bank (as in directly from a Camera Raw engineer).

Truthfully, this is a really bad idea..sorry eronald but you are giving bad advice for the vast majority of users. Seriously, running Photoshop as a 64 bit app is a no brainer and will be faster on 64 bit OS's in literally almost all cases. If you are seeing this speed bump from 32 bit, there's something wrong with your system (which, BTW you fail to even mention).

Or load up Lion ... really PS, LR, and printing work just fine. Haven't had a single serious problem with Lion since day 1, running it on several machines now.
