Simulate Paper Color option not available - Spyder3 Profile IGGFS
« on: September 29, 2011, 04:04:53 am »

I've just created a profile for Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk using Spyder3 (729 patches+extended Grays). It prints fine, but there's a curiosity in softproofing with this profile: the Simulate Paper Color check box in PS is not available (CS3). This does not happen with any of the other profiles I've created with this system.

I've read through this old thread: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?;topic=21457.0
The poster here had what seems to be the exact same issue which he sorted out by re-measuring. This does not sort my profile out.

I've noticed that the L value for paper white, as measured by my Spyder, is very high: 99.7   If I artificially drop this in PM5 profile editor to about 99 and save out a new profile then PS will simulate the paper white for this new profile.

IGGFS has a fairly warm white, so it'd be nice to be able to simulate it in softproof.

Any thoughts? Could it be that my Spyder is over-reading the paper white? I dunno, I don't yet have the vocab to express my question properly.

Off hand, it sounds like the software creating the profile has a bug, I can’t see why this would not work, there has to be an Absolute Colorimetric table. Do you have ColorThink? Might be interesting to examine the profile there and see what the tags say, look at the curves etc. You have PROFILEMAKER PRO 5.0 but you’re using Spyder3 to build the profiles?

Yeah, got PM5, playing with the Spyder system.

It works the other way too: if I edit a profile I created for Enhanced Matte where Simulate Paper Colour is available and change its L value to the same 99.7 of the aforementioned then the SPC option is not available for the edited profile.

Maybe it's PS, not the profiles.

Edit: same effect when I edit one of the Epson profiles that come with the 9900 driver
