choosing 24" canvas for art festival
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:28:29 pm »

Please,
should I stay with what I know?
Is it possible for any of you canvas printers to chime in on which roll canvas is your best bet right now?
I'll probably get breathing color lyve,
the hype, the hype-I like the detail I can squeeze from it
daguerre is fine too.
I'm thinking there may be another good choice in the +/- $100/roll category
do any of you have a favorite right now?
Thank you

I've been using Lexjet Sunset Select Matte Canvas lately. Cheaper than Lyve and seems to work just fine.

^ Agree with above. A very nice canvas, that really shines when glamour 2 is added.

Ditto on Lexjet Sunset Select Matte.
Also use Breathing Colors Chromatta White and Lyve but to a lesser extent.

Plenty happy with IJ technologies Premium Edition Canvas, Artists Edition, unbrightened. Sprayed with Rosco Clear Arylic Gloss transparent Glaze diluted 1 to 1 with water.

John,

How does that compare to Black Diamond canvas from IJ Technologies?  If you've ever used it and can compare that is.

I use the Black Diamond Satin.  Its made for PK ink.  Premium Edition Canvas as a matte canvas would be best for MK ink.  They say it has more texture also.  Maybe not such a good thing.

I've used Black Diamond satin in the past.  Awesome canvas, but unfortunately too expensive in Canada.  I'm talking literally double the price.  If the Premium Edition matte has more texture I might like it.  I like a lot of tooth and texture for some of the things I print.

The character of the two canvas' is totally different! The Black Diamond Satin is a very stiff canvas, a little tougher to stretch. When using Krylon sprays, there was a gloss differential. The premium edition artist canvas (matt & water resistant) prints very nicely. And when coated with their Eclipse or other vinyl acrylic, has a nice uniform gloss. It is a thinner product, much more pliable and a breeze to stretch. I also like the much lower cost of the Premium addition, When stretched you would have a hard time differentiating. And yes, the Premium addition has slightly more texture, maybe a better way of describing it would be "different character" of texture.

Does IJ make their own products?
I like "tooth" as someone else pointed out an interest in as well.
I really like the stiff Hahnemuhle Monet canvas but find it hard to make as sharp as other less "toothy" and stiff canvases.
My favorite is lyve because it has a really pretty even weave which makes it easier for me to render a lifelike sharpness.
If I want a more "painted" look I like the heavier weave canvas I've used.
Mainly Hahnemuhle Monet, Daguerre, BC Lyve, and a few different Lexjet.
I'm tempted to get 2 rolls of each except they're 130+ each
If I get what I need from BC it goes down to 108 each.
Quibbling maybe.
I looked for the sunset matte and haven't found it in SFBA
I could order it online and just hope it is as nice for me as you guys are saying it has been for you.
I appreciate the IJ Technology lead,
thanks,
ok have a pleasant night and a wonderful tomorrow!

IJ technologies is located in St. Louis and does their own coating of canvas stocks. Their sales person Keith, is very nice, and might send out sample rolls. I've been dealing with them for many years and have been very satisfied with dealing with them.

I spoke with the president of IJ Technologies on the phone several times (can't think of his name at the moment, I did write it down though, but I'm thinking it's John) and he sent me some samples a couple years ago.  He was very knowledgeable and a great person to chat printing with.

If anyone gets the chance to deal with them and use their products they are phenomenal (both people and products).  They're Black Diamond canvas is to die for.  True, a little stiff, but I never had any problems stretching.  I still have some pieces sitting in direct sunlight a few years later uncoated and absolutely no colour shift - both with Epson inks and cheap G&G inks.  Can't scratch the ink off either.  In fact, just last night I was cleaning my studio and came across a rolled up canvas.  It was a test print on Black Diamond.  I scratched it with my nails pretty vigorously and nothing, nadda.... uncoated too.

I just wish their prices were a little cheaper to Canada.
