Zion National Park artist-in-residence....
« on: September 24, 2011, 05:24:42 pm »

I got the call earlier this week that I was awarded one of three annual Zion AIR's. Starting in mid-October I get four weeks with no commitments other than photography (aside from two, hour-long artist talks, that is). No work, no lawn mowing, no dog walking. Just me and a camera.

I have no idea the direction I'm taking other than I'm going to try and avoid the many cliches (as best I can). As much as I would love to stock up on salable work, this is not an appropriate opportunity for pretty pictures (well, maybe a few). My goal is to focus (literally) on the lesser appreciated, yet equally compelling, aspects of the park.

No matter how it works out, it's gonna be one helluva ride.

Four weeks....

Congratulations, Chuck. Like Eric, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your great new work from the park. (How about that for putting on pressure?)

Thanks, all. My excitement is mixed with a healthy dose of apprehension, as the place is pretty much opposite of the flat plains where I've done most of my work. But that's exactly the reason I applied to Zion. I needed to get outta my comfort zone. Now, if I can just resist the siren call of the cliche's. ChuuuuUUUUCk....come and take my picture...pretty please...I'm beautiful at sunset...

Chuck, Don't you dare get sucked in by the cliché sirens. From what I've seen of your splendid work, your comfort zone is far beyond the merely pretty. Surely there's a way to do your signature work within the confines of Zion -- unless the folks who awarded your AIR demand pretty. Strikes me that'll be the challenge, not any changes in your eye.

I agree with Russ.

And I'm sure he'll be willing to accompany you to Zion and place his hand in each of your pictures, to be sure that they show "the hand of man."   :D

Love to do it, Eric, but I'll be in Florida by the end of October.

Chuck, congrats. I'm looking foreword to hearing your comments about this opportunity.

I was offered something similar and at the time didn’t have the free time to take advantage of it.
