Nikon is preparing to jump on the MFDB market ?
« on: September 20, 2011, 05:32:39 pm »

Nikon has launched two interesting pages :-)

What will show us the Nikon? Big hands waiting for the big camera? It's getting interesting. Canon also is preparing a surprise on 22 September. Is this time we can count on a breakthrough? Does it jump on the MFDB market ? Everything is possible:)

If by MFDB you mean 2.7x crop factor sensor, then yes, Nikon is entering the MFDB market. And thusly Micro Four Thirds is Large Format.

According to Nikon rumors, the "I am coming" campaign would be about the mirrorless camera... or more importantly, about the first new Nikon lens mount in 50 years.

They are not sure what the big hands are about...

Cheers,
Bernard

Big hands, 'cos the new Nikon 1 is relatively small, so making hands appear bigger in comparison? I don't know, I do know that I want a Nikon rangefinder with a FX sensor, or better still, something like the Hassy XPan.

it'd be nice if they had a mirror-less 4/3 NIKON(F) mount, so you could use all the legacy nikon lenses w/o one of those cheap ebay chinese mount adapters...

that'd be cool. 1/4000 shutter speed, a clean 800iso, 1080p video, and all with Nikon f-mount lenses! That way 50+ years of F-mount glass that's been collecting dust could be used :)

just dreaming, that wouldn't make Nikon any more money :(, so it seems a new lensmount might be in order

Although its almost certain that the mirrorless will be the next Nikon announcement before any DSLR, it is also certain that the top of the new Nikon FF models (D4?) will have an interchangeable sensor. I know this through a conversation that happened in last years photokina in one of Koln's restaurants among representatives of MF manufacturers that had the info from sensor constructors. Since this is expected in the very near future, I would say that there is no chance whatsoever for them entering the MF market, they will rather try to compete it with some half-size sensor(s) and seek the quality with tech advancement through time. Bringing a larger format in the market would force them to design and manufacture a new series of lenses and perhaps compete their own highest level of cameras, they will never do that, they will rather prefer to use the same mount and market a camera against both the competition (Canon) and MF. If mirrorless was all htere was to it, revolutionary would indeed be hyperbole. I seem to recall mention of a few other features though. Whether they count as revolutionary is to be seen

I might buy one just to play with.
Still, nothing competes with the revenue I've gotten out of my Nikon D3.
The D3 is still "top" of the market/technology... even after 4 years.

Personally I prefer the same performance D700 due to size, but you are right on the rest. It seems that Nikon's decision to keep the resolution "sensible" was genius. If I expect some improvements from the successor this would be (in the order of preference). 1. Better highlight DR at low ISO (not that its worst than competition but its never enough). 2. Lower base ISO. 3. 100% viewfinder. 4. Interchangeable screens (split image?) 5. Slightly higher res (3-4mpx) just to cope with the occasional moire! and of course.... 6. A QUITER CAMERA (why am I shouting?). Cheers Theodoros, www.fotometria.gr
