I guess I'll have to switch to Nikon after all. I'm sure their lenses come with on-board, self-deploying parachutes.

Yes and not a cheap one, it's a "L" lens! I didn't know that I could punch holes in roofs with those lenses!

single use only.  :D seriously, terminal velocity is probably arround 200 mph.

Lens hood is an EW-83H, which fits 24-105mm f/4L .

Probably just a thief who thought he'd stolen a Nikon lens and showed his natural disgust by throwing it as high and as far as he could.
