Mounting Inkjet Prints
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:52:08 am »

Epson 4900 Inkjet - Printer
Moab Slickrock Metallic - Paper
16x48 - Print Sizes

I am looking for some recommendations on mounting my printed images.
Not really interested in the traditional picture frame and glass. I like the
floating off the wall look popular these days. I'm Not a fan of seeing myself
or a reflection in the image I am looking at.

Interested in the di-bond and face mount plexi, but from my research this seems to be quite
difficult with inkjet prints. The only product I have read about is the Seal Optimount and I am unable
to find anyone in Toronto that does this. Also worried about the longevity of this method.

I have been considering just mounting to di-bond or gatorboard and using a varnish to provide water and
uv protection such as moab's desert varnish.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, J
I'm hoping the new LL tutorial will cover, suggest some of these methods??

Here are several more ideas.
Second picture is canvas on dibond with a satin Seal over laminate.
Could also be sprayed or rolled with Glamor II or similar product for protection.
Last picture is a metallic print on dibond with custom aluminum frame made from dibond and aluminum railing from Decor.

I've adopted face mounting as my preferred display preference for up to 20 x 30. I print on the Hahnemuhle/Harman FB Gloss Baryta and have it mounted on masonite with a recessed frame (see image). The image is trimmed flush with the masonite (i.e. no border). Then a McDonald's photo lacquer is applied for protection. Nothing between you and the image.

This is a process I have been experimenting with a bit lately:  It's a laser cut 6mm finger jointed Baltic birch support/rag board/facemounted acrylic print sandwich.

Is this just a light coat or a serious coat that can really protect the  print? You don't see any ink bleed with the McDonald's photo lacquer?  I've found nothing that can really seal in an inkjet paper without losing at least a small amount of sharpness from the inks bleeding together.

No, it's a serious coat. I don't see any bleed (haven't taken a loupe to them) but at normal viewing distance they look like the native print in resolution. To a close look, the main thing is there's a very slight addition of fine texture drop from the spray, which is still ends up much less than most baryta papers. I've certainly seen bleeding with other coating/paper combinations and it seems very individual.
Wish I could speak to ease of use/skill needed but I've been having Colourworks in Wilmington do these for me http://colourworks.com/colourworks_content.html
