Banner ads

There are ways to include advertisements that are appealing and non-distracting, and then there is what we have here.

Animation? Whatever were you folks thinking?

Can't say that I disagree, but it does help pay the bills.

I've gotten so use to the redesign that I don't even notice them any longer.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problems with ads, in principal, but these are just a bit too...flashy.

I have no problem with the banner ads. They aren't intrusive at all. I have been on a forum where every few seconds a full page ad would pop up when I was trying to read a post. That is intrusive.

I haven't seen an ad anywhere on the web in years.  Firefox with NoScript and Ad Block Plus...

As long as they don't become *more* intrusive, it seems like a small sacrifice if it pays the bills. I've left a couple of forums that have pop-up ads that obscure text, and I won't go back.

Duane, if we all do that, then soon we will be paying to read sites like Luminous Landscape.

If there is no ad revenue to be had, it doesn't matter if the visitor uses Ad Block Plus, NoScript and Ghostery (like I do). Ads are paid by clicks, not by views - and I don't click ads even if I see them, which happens perhaps once a month on my home computer thanks to the mentioned addons.

For the record, I make a point in using affiliate links when available. Although that's problematic as well: if a webmaster gets significant income through affiliate links from products she reviews, it can result in biased reviews. Therefore full disclosure is the minimum requirement, and many jurisdictions require it. But that's another discussion.

You can't click on what you don't see.

And I already said that I don't click on ads even if I see them.

Whenever I use someone else's computer without ad blockers, I'm amazed at the amount of on-screen crap people put up with.

I can understand making that choice, but ultimately it may lead to everyone paying for content.

I can't speak for everyone.

Would that necessarily be bad? But, ads are a fact of the web these days and I have learned to live with them as long as they are relevant and not intrusive. Lula is OK in these respects.
