My friends,

A few pics captured in Tokyo this weekend during one of those lovely Awa Odori Matsuri (festivals).

Fine shooting, Bernard. I really like the tonal range you got in these, but I'd like #2 even better if you'd used a Nik control point or the dodging brush to bring up the face of that girl on the far right, a face that's in sharp focus -- not enough dodging to make the face out of context with the surroundings, but enough to let her features be barely visible. All in all, it's very good street work.

Looking at 1 wouldn't 2 also not look very nice in colour? I like the warm tones in the colour version.

From the male dancers I like 3 best, the context around it makes it come more alive then 4 and 5 and all the lines of the arms and body postions make it a very balanced picture.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed seeing this festival through your eyes.

That is a very good observation. The following images have lightened faces and that is what makes the images. Your eye is immediately drawn to the faces and then you look at the surroundings which are good backdrops for the focal point. A good day's shooting. If I may ask how many shots did you take to get these fine images? In other words what was your keeper ratio? :)

Thanks.

On top of these 5, I did select about 20 I consider as OK, I would say that another 30 or so are decent but have some problem (being boring is one of them).

The remaining 945 images are essentially a useless collection of blurred pixels. :)

Bernard

About 5% are acceptable to you which is about what a good photographer would expect? Bernard would you normally take this many at an event? When I do events - which I do a lot - then about 300 would be my maximum. 5% is about what I would be happy to get. :)

Well, I love this thing, but it really isn't my cup of tea. I shoot 95% of my images from the top of a tripod using live view, so I first had to remember how to activate the AF of my body. :-)

Some of the images were fairly easy because movements were slow, but some of it is pretty challenging because of the sheer speed of the action together with my attempts to keep a sense of movement when needed.

Since I bought 32GB cards a few years ago I have sort of stopped defining limits to the amount of images I don't want to shoot during a session. I had not anticipated I would shoot so many on Sunday, but as the event unfolded, between the speed of movement, the very quickly changing harsh light (there was one big spot only), the sheer amount of interesting action,... I realized I was shooting quite a lot.  ;D

Anyway, I am sure that you would have done much better in similar circumstances.

Cheers,
Bernard

Nice work, Bernard. And 5% seems like a good take for a mountain-top, live-view, tripod specialist.

Cheers,

Eric

My amateur opinion is this:

1. Love it;
2. Would have been much more effective in color;
3. " " " " " " " ".
4. Excellent / works well in B&W;
5. Would have been better in color; unusual-looking dude; wierd dental structure (cut-off hand though :o).
