stability of a monitor - temperature compensation
« on: August 18, 2011, 02:50:24 pm »

Hi all,

I'm trying to find out:
- how stable is my monitor / when is my monitor stable enough to calibrate it and make a profile.
- what is the effect of the heat that my monitor produces on my spectro.

I do this by measuring the white point with an i1pro (revD). and use iColor Display 3.7
My monitor is an HP LP2475w.

This is my procedure:
- turn on / warm-up the monitor
- reset the RGB value to 100
- reset the LUT curve
- make sure that the environment is dark

Test1 - results
---------------
Monitor turned on at 20.10u
Eye-One placed on the monitor at 21.10u

21.10u
RGB 100/100/100
332 - 331 -  329 Cd/m² / 6337K - 6358K (0,32 dE / 2000) - 6405K (0,8 dE / 2000)
EyeOne removed again

22.10u
RGB 100/100/100
332 - 330 -  329 Cd/m² / 6315K - 6376K (0,73 dE / 2000) - 6419K (1,17 dE / 2000)
EyeOne removed again

Test2 - results
---------------
Monitor turned on at 20.15u
Eye-One placed on the monitor at 22.15u

22.15u
RGB 100/100/100
329 - 327 -  326 Cd/m² / 6350K - 6395K (0,46 dE / 2000) - 6442K (0,87 dE / 2000)
EyeOne not removed

22.50u
RGB 100/100/100
311 - 310 -  309 Cd/m² / 6788K - 6799K (0,12 dE / 2000) - 6810K (0,21 dE / 2000)
EyeOne not removed

23.11u
RGB 100/100/100
307 - 307 Cd/m² / 6849K - 6853K (0,03 dE / 2000)
K values are changing between 6855 56 55 55 56 55 56 55 54 56 57 56 55 55 56

Conclusion:
The Luminance value is always stable, no matter how long the spectro is placed on the monitor.
The Luminance value is dropping when the spectro is placed on the monitor for a while.
The white point colour temperature becomes stable after 3 hours.

Questions:
1. The EyeOne pro has no temperature compensations, correct?
Only the basICColor Discus, the X-Rite Chroma 5 and the DTP94 have temperature compensation.
The EyeOne Pro, Spyder3, EyeOne Display 2 a the ColorMunki don't have temperature compensation, correct?
What about the new EyeOne Display pro?

2. What is your experience with your device? Is the colour temperature stable after a while (x hours) or is it also constantly increasing?
Is a stable colour temperature only possible on a high-end Eizo / Nec?

3. Is there activity needed on the screen while warming-up or is a screen saver enough?

Test3 - results
---------------
Monitor turned on at 20.00u
Eye-One placed on the monitor at 20.00u

21.50
RGB 100/100/100= 6795K / 304 cd/m²
6500 = 5945 / 261 cd/m²
9300 = 7892 / 205 cd/m²
sRGB = 5606 / 161 cd/m²

Questions:
1. Do you get similar results? Typically a native white point of a LCD is around 6500K, correct?
I was expecting for sRGB also something around 6500K...
