small portable manual flashgun with aptus II 5?
« on: August 18, 2011, 02:16:18 am »

I prefer interiors most of the time "as is" with ambient light, but sometimes it does help with a weak fill-in flash for the foreground. I have been looking for a "smallish" flashgun that is completely manual (and standard cord connection) that I can pair with my Alpa and Aptus II 5. Actually, I would like to have two of the same where one can act as a slave.
I have Profoto studioflashes but I am tired of the bulk on location....

Is Metz 45 (do not know specific modelnumber) soething to consider? Any good suggestions?

Thanks  :)

Bought a Quantum QFlash 5TDr, mainly for the TTL function via the dedicated QF18 module on my AFI. The flash is very powerful and still light. in my case I supply the power via either a Standard Turbo battery or latest Turbo 3. in your case, I can see the evident advantage to use this combination with the Quantum Turbo 3 battery. One socket will bring power to the flash and the second one will bring power to the Aptus. No more worry for powering your back in location, you will be exhausted before the Turbo 3. For my setup I still need to have a battery in the handgrip of the body AFI. Metz 45CT4 are very nice unit too, very cheap on the second hand Market. Cheers Jean-Luc

Try the Strobist site. There is always valuable information for shooting with portable flashguns.

I have heavy Profoto battery packs, but when I want to travel light and don't need so much power, I have an Elinchrom Ranger Quadra RX pack, spare battery, extension lead and a couple of heads, which I'm very happy with.

The heads are very small and light, have a daylight balanced LED model light. They have a slot for an umbrella and take a few of their own modifiers, or with an adaptor, you can use the full size Elinchrom modifiers. The packs are 400W/S with an asymmetric split, also come with built in Radio skyport.

Personally, I can never get on with Speedlites, strobist style, I find it all a bit of a bodge. The Quadra suits me just fine, although not as compact as just Speedlites, the pack is still relatively small and light.

I guess the other obvious suggestion comparable to this is Lumedyne, but I think the Elinchrom is more sophisticated.

I have a couple of these. Really small and simple. Up to 800ws.
