No Shoes Required
« on: August 15, 2011, 05:06:19 am »

Here's a series of shots I took in Nepal recently. I wonder if anyone finds them interesting. I do.

Constructive criticisms are welcome.

That's odd. Only one image appeared.

Let's try again. Okay! So selection of only one at a time is allowed.

I guess I don't get it - they are all wearing shoes. Nice color though.

They are wearing slippers or thongs. If you walked into a shop and asked to try some shoes, would you expect to be shown thongs and slippers?

The point is, when Europeans and Americans go trekking in such regions, they usually buy $100 boots. Okay?

I consider anything put on my feet to be "shoes" but I guess that is because I grew up mostly barefoot - the real kind. I'm from America and go trekking all the time in sandals (I've logged more than 2,00 miles in one pair of Tevas). It was just an odd title since they are all wearing shoes of one sort or another, but I guess different strokes....

Good point, Eric. When I present my slideshow of the type of footwear normally used by Nepalese country folk, entitled "No Shoes Required", and some Smart Alec protests, "But they are wearing shoes", I shall point out that the chicken isn't.  ;D

The young lady below is wearing an improved type of footwear that could almost be called a shoe, although I would more precisely describe it as a slipper  ;D

I am impressed. I know my feet couldn't handle those trails without at least a half inch of Vibram under them.

Fascinating images, Ray.

Good shooting, Ray, especially the rooster. You don't often get a rooster on the street.

Thanks, Russ. I think maybe the rooster is walking the wrong way. Can't he read the sign?  ;D

Perhaps an unfortunate side effect of visiting countries like Nepal is that I find it difficult to get excited about the normal acitivities of life in the cities in Australia.

These Nepalese in the countryside have such a hard life and take on such arduous physical tasks as a matter of course, without thinking twice, I almost feel embarrassed when I see scenes in the cities in developed countries, of people lounging around and having an easy time.

I saw the guy in the attached photo coming towards me, after I'd climbed over a 5ft wall. He looked old and his load looked heavy. I asked my guide to ask him his age and how heavy was the load. He claimed to be 60, and his load 60Kg. Maybe too much of a coincidence to be true, but he certainly looked old, and his load certainly looked heavy. I can see there's a carton of Pepsi there.

I wondered how he'd manage to climb over that stone wall, and waited till he reached it, then took the shot.

He managed it okay. What a way to earn a living! But at least he's probably a lot healthier and fitter than many 60-year olds in developed countries, despite the lack of vitamin pills and good medical care.

Oops! I see chromatic aberration in that image. Isn't that annoying! I keep forgetting that CS5 has automatic correction for that, in ACR. It sometimes becomes obvious in crops, then I realise I forgot to make use of that automatic facility. I must be getting old.  ;D

This rendition is better, don't you think?
