Wil there ever be a Canon 1Ds MK4?
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:40:38 pm »

I want to upgrade my 5d mk1 to a new full frame camera  with 1D mk4 capabilities.
Will Canon ever upgrade the 1Ds mk3 ? No need for zillions of megapixels but 25-30 would be nice. Perhaps discussed befor but autumn is coming.

You can follow canon rumors at their blog site. IIRC the current thinking is that we'll see a 5D Mark III before a iDs Mark IV, but I take none of these rumors seriously -- Canon is generally very good at keeping new releases secret.

Well, given that one UK 'Pro' dealer is saying that the 1Ds3 is 'discontinued' I imagine it won't be long to find out ;-)

Keith
Because of my investment in canon glass and the need for a new camera I have watched your site Northlight images over the past 1 1/2 year. But it seems that no one knows. I sometimes wonder if Canon knows. They are overhauled left and right and it seems that they can’t get their act together. But there is hope! A sales person in the Netherlands advised, yesterday, not to buy a 1D MKIV because Canon would come in September with a announcement. Yet an other rumour or is the announcement a 1 year delay form Photokina 2010?
Any Way. IMHO Canon is loosing on the professional front in a big way until the contrary is proved.

There is certainly a rise of rumors lately predicting that the new pro Canon is just around the corner. (Keith's site, canonrumours etc)

However there doesn't seem to be alot of photographer chat on the forums about it. Especially compared to before the 1DS3 was released.

Perhaps we are over new pro DSLRs ?  A few more pixels, slightly better DR, a stop or two better ISO and an increase in price. Perhaps it'd becoming all to predictable.

I know that a lot of people are not interested in the rumours, so I'll not go into any details here.
I started collecting a few notes about them in 2004 (long before the rumour blogs) when I was looking for new equipment myself and confused by all the seemingly random stuff appearing.
In many ways I'd much prefer the site to be better known for the articles and reviews I write, but the visitor numbers the established rumours pages bring in are something that no commercial site can ignore (remember that the site also brings me in new commercial work).

Over the years, the single most reliable timing predictor of Canon's evolutionary design strategies is the EOS DSLR time line and their normal timings for announcements.

The quantity of good solid leaks has declined rapidly, as 'those that do know' are under stricter NDA agreements and have more to lose by saying anything. If you look at some of the stuff that has appeared recently, much is just noise from the 'I want it now!" contingent.

My particular interest here is that my own 1Ds3 is now ~3.5 years old and what comes next may influence my choices as to whether digital MF is of business relevance to my own work (note important distinction from something I'd like to play around with ;-) )

BTW - Happy to discuss rumours on Google+ (seems a more appropriate place ;-) ) http://bit.ly/northlight-gplus  - I have some spare 'invites' too if anyone wants to try it out.

Keith, I follow your rumours site and came to it by reading your articles. BTW I use your B&W test image for years! Great explanation what the image does and can be used for. Keep my fingers crossed for September.
As a former electronics engineer I totally agree with Michael’s Optimizing Exposure and the recent article on this site, Five Camera Technologies We Want, But Likely Won't Get.

Well.. have a look at this facebook page - which is Canon Australia's official FB page.
http://www.facebook.com/CanonAustralia
Now answer their poll question - what gear do you own?
Look at the list.. there is a 1DS MKIV there  ;D
I would say some eager beaver made a typo...

Hi Joshua,
Canon Australia commented on their Wall post.
Canon Australia wrote: "Hi Joshua, we’ve actually just removed the survey you refer to because people were allowed to name their Canon products and unfortunately some people posted products that aren’t available in Australia or do not exist, like the camera you’re referring to. Sorry for the confusion, the Canon team."
