Different Size Canvas Prints
« on: August 13, 2011, 01:34:06 pm »

Hello everyone.  I'm new to this board.  I'm starting my own canvas printing business and while doing research came upon this forum.  I'm so glad for it as MANY of my questions have been answered here.  I'm in the process of purchasing my Canon ipf8300 this week and some canvas media from Breathing Color to start.  Here's my question.  If I have a 44" wide printer and have 44" media, if I want to print a smaller image smaller than 44" do I need a seperate roll of canvas with that width?  Or do I just print the smaller image on the 44" canvas and cut off the excess on the side?  Thanks for the help!

You certainly can print on the large roll and trim, but that's a lot of waste.
If your just starting in wide format printing I would skip the 36" and 44' medias until you get a handle on things.
You can start with 17" and 24" rolls and then use the larger sizes as you have need for those sizes.
To answer your question,I would buy a roll of all 4 sizes.

i print for a living and rarely use narrower rolls, as I either tile smaller prints into larger rolls to print or use the excess as sheet canvas, which can be for mid-size prints or proofs.  I find that I can use 36" wide canvas for the majority of my printing, although obviously prints wider than 36" in the short direction require 44" canvas.  If I have a lot of prints that fit best on 24" canvas I will use that, but the 36" canvas seems to be the most used middle of the road size for me.

Thanks guys for the help.  I'm going to order something small to start with.  Maybe 24" and start there.  I know my future Canon 8300 can print almost anything but I'm focusing right now on canvas since so one in my regional area is doing it yet.  I don't know if to advertise as a canvas printing business or just a printing business in general.  So many questions I need answered . . .
